GBAtemp users face a dilemma more than most when it comes to the Switch 2. To update or not to update? Many wait patiently for homebrew, others less patiently, and some are just waiting for a game that's worth updating for. In the six months since the system launched, we've seen Nintendo publish the likes of Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Kirby Air Riders exclusively to their new console. For some this wasn't enough. Some were still waiting for something legendary, something special. Something wheeled out for every half-year anniversary. Some were waiting for Skyrim.

It is time to rejoice, and for many time to update your systems, as little-known game development studio Bethesda have today released the latest version of 2011's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo's hyrbrid wonderkid. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is now available via digital download for the Switch 2, along with a free upgrade path for those who already own the Anniversary Edition of the original Switch release. This new version promises enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, better loading times and performance, and mouse controls, alongside the motion controls and Amiibo support of the original Switch release. It should be noted that the game still runs at 30fps however.

Though there is an upgrade path, it's not quite as simple as Nintendo's "Switch 2 Edition" titles, with users required to jump through a few hoops to avoid shelling out for the game a second (or seventh for some) time. Owners of the digital version should see a 100% discount on the new release assuming they own the Anniversary Edition upgrade. Physical cartridge owners however will first need to remove their Anniversary Edition DLC before launching the game and pressing Y on the main menu to access the eShop. If you own the upgrade (but again, do not have it installed), you should be able to download the Switch 2 version for that same 100% off. Once you've added this to your account, you actually don't need your cartridge anymore, so feel free to pass it onto a friend for the holidays!

Yeah it was a launch year game for the Switch. This is an upgrade that's free to people who have the Switch game plus Anniversary Edition DLC. You also get the Switch 2 version for buying the Anniversary DLC if you only have the base game I think, so it's not a terrible deal at least.

If only Switch 2 had OLED screen, might be an ideal way to play vanilla Skyrim. I don't even mind 30fps, that's what it launched at.

It's what I wish the switch 2 had but we know there will be a newer switch 2 model with it at some point. Once you go OLED, it's hard, imo, to go back to an inferior screen. At least for me, anyway! I can really tell the difference

Wasn't brought up here at all so figured I'd mention that Skyrim has been 60fps on every other console and PC since special edition.

Kiiiiinda? The second release was basically just DLC. And I’d argue the Switch benefitted from that DLC much more than the other platforms since it’s the only way to get additional content on that version. It surprised me that both PS and XB both have some kind of modding store for the game.

The PS one is pretty limited though.

I wonder when Oblivion is coming.

It has noticeable issues on the Series S. I doubt the Switch 2 can handle that since it struggles with Cyberpunk.
