It really died in 1981-82. That's when solid copper penny production ended, and they started being made from zinc with a copper outer wash. If you drop a real copper penny on a hard surface, you'll usually be able to hear a high pitched belltone sound, but with any penny from 1982-onward (there are some, but not many 1982 all copper pennies. Most are zinc.), you just get a non-resonant thunk.

Not here in the EU. 1 cents coins are alive and well :p
Canadian penny died at age 145. (1867-2012)
Though I'm not even sure if they even existed back in 1867 or if it was still "Dominion money".
However, there do were half-cent and two cents coins back then.

the way things are progressing all hard currency will be obsolete soon. i use tap and go 99% of the time. there's only a few things i actually need cash for.

So the question I have, is as someone who sorts their spare change into separate jars - pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters - which jar do I consolidate my pennies into since it won't be getting much fuller?

Quick how can we get mad a Trump over this?

Get help.

Strange that it's finally gone, after hearing my whole life how we should get rid of them.

Okay, who's the hell's gonna be mad at this?
Zinc companies, Coinstar, charities, and Abe Lincoln historical places.

Trump had a hate boner for pennies, that and they also costed like 3.50 cents to make a penny.

It costs us 2-3 cents to make 1 cent

Half of the Coinstar machines don't work in my area + who cares about them when they literally take 10% of our money and then provide nothing in return other than the cash that was literally ours, and every other machine like washers or vending machines don't take pennies

And you think after the penny is gone, the entire Nation's gonna forget about Lincoln? Like a top 5 President??

There's still the 5-dollar bill and the monument

Most of our coinage has been dead since 1965 and 1971 (for half dollars). I carry a silver dollar from 1889 in my wallet with me everywhere (I only paid $12 for it and it's worn flat). I flip and and ping it from time to time for people if I remember I still have it and they really get a kick out of it and the sound. It literally sounds like a bell. The 90% silver/10% copper sounds really pleasant.

Those overpriced proof sets from the mint are going to have one less coin in them every year and the prices will probably go up?

I don't give a shit if pennies are gone, and I believe they should have died 10 to 15 years ago. I was just answering a question about what companies/people could be mad about pennies dying. And I'm well aware Abe is on the 5 dollar bill.
