Two more rare mobile games are now preserved and playable
Mobile games from the early and late 2000s have started to gain some traction when it comes to preservation efforts, be it by Youtubers that track down either original developers or the owners of the device that has a certain game, or by hacking enthusiasts that collect older phones through Japanese auction sites in hopes of finding a particular phone that has a still non-preserved game, and then the attempt to break their encryption and dumping begins, and sometimes, even both instances join efforts to dump and preserve certain titles.
In this instance, Video Game Esoterica covers the finding of two new specific Japanese-only phone titles, with the first one being Bomberman 3D, which is a 3D outing of Bomberman with the classic gameplay the franchise is known for, and the second title being a bullet-hell shoot-em-up game from the DoDonPachi franchise, which was a very peculiar case and a milestone for preservation, as this particular title was only up for sale for 24 hours only back in the day, making this finding a one in a million, and more so that the people involved managed to dump the game and preserve it for days to come.
These two games are playable through the Keitai World Launcher, which is a software that launches multiple emulators for a specific set of feature phones in Japan that allowed for 2D and 3D graphics with their own store. This requires a .NET 7.0 runtime and a Java environment installed in order to run the mobile games.
