Earlier today Sony announced that it has made the decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States starting tomorrow, August 21.

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:

• PlayStation 5 – $549.99
• PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
• PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

These new recommended prices reflect an increase of $50 across the board for each console. As of now, the recommended retail prices for PS5 accessories remain unchanged.

Sony cites the "challenging economic environment" as the reason for the change.

For $300 more price of a $1,000 a 9060xt with a 8core cpu and 32gb ram kit would out perform ps5 pro within miles. You're locked into an ecosystem going console. Only buy base if you truly want an exclusive title otherwise 80% of the entire library is already ported to pc. PC parts you don't have to buy all in one go. A ps5 you do so overtime when you save more money you can upgrade parts too outperform any console out right now.

You have to pay for the pc upgrades just like you'd have to pay for a new console. Even if you're only upgrading one part, you still had to pay for ALL of the parts to build the pc.

I did some two-second research. The PS5 is compatible with most PS4 games, but PS1-PS3 games are only playable via cloud services. I'm guessing PS Plus and the PSN Store are your only ways of playing those games. This is important for consumers considering a PS5: You cannot put your PS1-PS3 discs in the PS5.

Not accurate. It's just PS3 games that are only available to play via cloud services. You can download and install PS1 and PS2 games. Sure you can't put PS1-PS3 discs in. Most people really don't care. People that have stacks and stacks of PS1, PS2, and PS3 games laying around most likely have a PS1, PS2, or PS3 to play them on. Those systems can also be emulated easily enough even on a old ass PC like mine so the PS5 not playing the discs really doesn't matter anyway.

Yeah, it was hard getting straight answers on the backwards compatibility. I felt like I was coming across more fluff pieces than quick, concise, and accurate articles. I think the nature of the backwards compatibility is important. I don't like to underestimate consumers. People always want the most value for their money, so I'd argue that the accessibility of previous-gen games makes a difference. For $750 USD, I want to know what a console can do for me.

If you can't use your discs, you have to pay on the PSN or get a subscription to PS Plus. That leaves unused game discs on the table, and it requires more money upfront. These factors do contribute to a console's overall value. That's why PC builds seem so compelling. After all, you can amass a large Steam library, and (without getting complicated) those games will remain there between hardware changes.

Again, you didn't originally say "exclusive". You added that part in later. PS5 can also play a pretty good number of prior gen PS exclusives that do not have a PC port.
