Earlier today Sony announced that it has made the decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States starting tomorrow, August 21.
The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:
PlayStation 5 – $549.99
PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99
These new recommended prices reflect an increase of $50 across the board for each console. As of now, the recommended retail prices for PS5 accessories remain unchanged.
Sony cites the "challenging economic environment" as the reason for the change.
There’s actually only 18 exclusive games for the PS5, with a history of the PS5 not keeping them exclusive forever. I have a PC, I have no reason to buy a PS5
You didn't mention exclusives in your comment. The PS5 can also play many PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 exclusives so there's more to it than "PS5 has no games". People also own consoles for reasons other than exclusives. I am one of those people, because my PC is old as hell and it would cost a good deal more to build an entire new PC that would be significantly better than a PS5 or Series X for gaming. If you have a great PC, sure, maybe PS5 has no games. But that can then be said for nearly every other console ever made due to emulation. Not many consoles have games because a person can emulate the majority. It's just kind of a silly argument, the "no games" thing. Imo. Saying you're not interested because you have a capable gaming pc is one thing (and I would agree with you in that case), but saying PS5 "has no games" is another.
Alright alright, next time I import a handheld from Japan and UPS tries charging me for the tariffs, I'll just tell them they're a bunch of dumb libs that lack common sense and education.

Wut? I recently bought a bunch of crap from Japan and got 0 tariff charges. I got a one chip Super Famicom for 60 dollars and 40 dollars! Super Famicoms are so cheap on eBay! I also got a Famicom for 25 dollars, and another Super Famicom bundled for 80 dollars total, which 40 dollars got refunded because the Super Famicom was dead(I may try to fix it one day). All the consoles included 2 controllers, and ac adapter.
I know this is off topic, but it's fun to brag about!
A few months ago all this shit was being sold for like 85 dollars, and I'm still kicking my self for not buying it! That multi tap alone looks so cool!

As of 30 July, 2025 - US de minimis to be eliminated effective 29 August, 2025
US de minimis will be suspended globally, effective 29 August, 2025, meaning all shipments to the US, regardless of value, may be subject to duties and customs clearance.
Reciprocal tariffs are currently in place, including the base tariff of 10% that was implemented on 5 April. This applies to items sold into the US from the UK and all other countries.
It's important to note that tariffs are based on the "Country/Region of Manufacture" (country of origin). For instance, if you're a UK seller exporting to the US and your products are made in China, they'll be subject to China's tariff rather than the UK tariff.
The formal clearance threshold remains at $2,500. This means US buyers will need to provide a Social Security or Tax ID number for these shipments for formal entry.
We're continuing to gather information on upcoming announcements and will share any updates with you as soon as we have more details.
Note: this was just from a casual lookup and I know things can get complicated, even just shipping my GPU to Germany from the UK for an RMA was a PITA.
I'd still say it would be smarter to always buy base consoles, going pro consoles is PC price territories and doesn't make much sense. I only kind of get it if you already have a beast of a PC but even then I'd say a pro model isn't worth it because you already have a beast of a pc. lol
This is such a good point. At around the $700 USD range, which is the asking price of a PS5 Pro (soon to be $750 USD), you really do get into gaming PC territory. If you already have some parts that can be salvaged from a current build- PSU, case-, the price goes down even more.
From there, you get to ask yourself the real questions. Does the PS5 have any exclusives you really want to play? (Consider the list.) Do your desired games run better on PC (Check system requirements, DRM, etc.)? Would you make use of the PC's large library? Do you already have a Steam account with multiple games?
I am glad that I purchased an original PS5 version a long time ago. Next PS6 will be in Europe when I am moving there. Here is too much and higher cost of living. Forget it. Hello, my beloved country in Europe soon.

I disagree with going with base console. For the price of the Pro you can build a PC that barely keeps up with the Pro in gaming performance, and in cases performs worse than the Pro. What's the point in building a gaming PC that can't even clearly beat a console? The point of a gaming PC to me is so that you can have a night and day improvement over a console. And you can't do that for $700. Price on the PS5 Pro is actually a decent deal.

For $300 more price of a $1,000 a 9060xt with a 8core cpu and 32gb ram kit would out perform ps5 pro within miles. You're locked into an ecosystem going console. Only buy base if you truly want an exclusive title otherwise 80% of the entire library is already ported to pc. PC parts you don't have to buy all in one go. A ps5 you do so overtime when you save more money you can upgrade parts too outperform any console out right now.

Yeah, there's a definite difference between a mid-range and high-end gaming PC. It really does come down what the user is looking for. I admit, I'd argue for a gaming PC, but that doesn't mean it's the only choice. I wouldn't want to push people away from what they really want.
I always recommend consumers do their research, especially with PC building. In the case of the PS5, the lack of exclusives is important to consider. Sure, there's plenty of games- multiplatform or not-, but I consider exclusives a linchpin for any console.
As an aside, it baffles me how much Sony and Microsoft have dropped the ball on this. I don't know where to start - The focus on cinematic games, lack of focus on broad demographics, shelving popular franchises, underutilization of acquired studios, etc. Just bad business.
I did some two-second research. The PS5 is compatible with most PS4 games, but PS1-PS3 games are only playable via cloud services. I'm guessing PS Plus and the PSN Store are your only ways of playing those games. This is important for consumers considering a PS5: You cannot put your PS1-PS3 discs in the PS5.

It's because of ports I can't really recommend buying a console first. Like I said if you already have a beefy PC it makes more sense why you'd want a console. Plus with cross play feature people can't really argue just get what your friends get unless there are exclusives that rarely stay exclusive.
