Earlier today Sony announced that it has made the decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States starting tomorrow, August 21.

The updated recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. are as follows:

• PlayStation 5 – $549.99
• PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
• PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99

These new recommended prices reflect an increase of $50 across the board for each console. As of now, the recommended retail prices for PS5 accessories remain unchanged.

Sony cites the "challenging economic environment" as the reason for the change.

You didn't mention exclusives in your comment. The PS5 can also play many PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 exclusives so there's more to it than "PS5 has no games". People also own consoles for reasons other than exclusives. I am one of those people, because my PC is old as hell and it would cost a good deal more to build an entire new PC that would be significantly better than a PS5 or Series X for gaming. If you have a great PC, sure, maybe PS5 has no games. But that can then be said for nearly every other console ever made due to emulation. Not many consoles have games because a person can emulate the majority. It's just kind of a silly argument, the "no games" thing. Imo. Saying you're not interested because you have a capable gaming pc is one thing (and I would agree with you in that case), but saying PS5 "has no games" is another.

I'd still say it would be smarter to always buy base consoles, going pro consoles is PC price territories and doesn't make much sense. I only kind of get it if you already have a beast of a PC but even then I'd say a pro model isn't worth it because you already have a beast of a pc. lol

This is such a good point. At around the $700 USD range, which is the asking price of a PS5 Pro (soon to be $750 USD), you really do get into gaming PC territory. If you already have some parts that can be salvaged from a current build- PSU, case-, the price goes down even more.

From there, you get to ask yourself the real questions. Does the PS5 have any exclusives you really want to play? (Consider the list.) Do your desired games run better on PC (Check system requirements, DRM, etc.)? Would you make use of the PC's large library? Do you already have a Steam account with multiple games?

It's because of ports I can't really recommend buying a console first. Like I said if you already have a beefy PC it makes more sense why you'd want a console. Plus with cross play feature people can't really argue just get what your friends get unless there are exclusives that rarely stay exclusive.
