I know buying an entire laptop just to reduce my screentime sounds counterintuitive, but I need one that can I can write emails with but not watch YouTube or browse Twitter on very well, which should be an easy task with how resource intensive the modern web is.

As for why I can't do that on my current laptop, I didn't put a lot of XP into the impulse control skill tree during character creation :P

Not a thinkpad, get a vostro 1700. those things are bulky and they absolutely show their age, you will dread pulling it out every time. Now just put XP on it, behind a NAT / firewall of course, and connect it to IMAP + SMTP. problem solved.

alternatively put a linux distro on it, your email client, then nuke the web browser and trash your package manager so if you feel tempted you don't break your own rules :grog:

IDK, the screen being 16:9 will automatically make me want to put some shows on it, lol.

Until recently I used an x201 daily for most things for about half a year. It is still new enough to run Youtube videos (though in Firefox they lag in fullscreen).

Before that I tried using an x61 for a day or two, but it was just too slow. Somewhere around that is going to be the cut off point.

The literal answer is likely some fake model e.g. the L series, the real ones (despite crap being pulled for 10+ years such as 16:9, the "new" keyboard, more soldered parts, no more real docks, etc) will if anything make personal computing a little greater again ;)

The X61 sounds perfect for me, I'll see if I can find one.
Wouldn't it be easier to limit your current laptop/Gear to 56k speed?
I'm not fond of wasting my time.

Could even do something similar on their current laptop, just either dual boot or create a locked down user account.

Real answer should be not a thinkpad. I have an x230T but I'm always messing with it because there's so many custom drivers and stuff to set up if I'm bored. If you just buy a cheap pentium gold craptop from ebay or walmart there won't be any community around it and there won't be anything to mess with. The more fun it is to use the more you'll want to tweak stuff
