New mod called Fallout: Bakersfield aims to recreate Fallout 1 in DOOM's engine

The Fallout series is no stranger to mods--even prior to its days running on the easily-modded Bethesda Studios Gamebryo engine, dedicated fans have been creating projects since the 1990s. The latest fanwork comes from "Red888guns", or Alexander Berezin, who is attempting to take a section from Fallout 1 and recreate it in FPS style using DOOM's engine. Berezin has a history with modding Fallout, having worked on Fallout: Sonora and Olympus 2207, both massive modifications to Fallout 2.

This project, titled Fallout: Bakersfield, has received a trailer showcasing the massive work put into taking DOOM 1993's style and mixing it with the aesthetic of the original Fallout game. The trailer goes through iconic parts of the city of Necropolis, featuring gory mutilations, dialog with a Super Mutant, and the highly stylized post apocalyptic look of the California wasteland. At the end of the video, it teases a release window for the GZDoom WAD for sometime in 2027.

I could maybe understand hating FO 3 and 4, but new vegas and the preceding games? Have you played them - or you just hate them because they're popular?
I for one didn't really have access to *a* PC capable of playing games until 1999, and about the thing that kept me interested enough were Duke3D and half-life. Fallout, then, had no interest to me.

Fallout 3&4? Eff that Bethesda jank. Eff Todd Howard, and quadruple eff his turbo goth writer that killed off all the nonhuman sentients from 1&2.

the games barely run even in the GOG release
they run fine, and they come with visual overhauls, you just have to enable that

As for the jank yeah, they're early CRPGs, the jank is genuinely part of the charm. if you look at this and think every element on that HUD bar needs a giant glowing help pop-up to explain what it does, perhaps read the manual that is ALSO included in the GOG version. The manual LITERALLY walks you through what each of them is, and does. As well as explains how to leave the rat cave!

I won't argue about the trials at the start of 2, though. Fuck that shit.

I'm keeping my expectations low, it wouldn't be the first time a project of this scale for Fallout was abandoned.

Having said that this preview does look cool they really captured the vibe of the OG game really well.

So this is being developed for GZDoom, not Doom Doom, right? It will still require a modern computer to run?
Yeah, pretty much nothing runs on "OG Doom" it's all sourceports. Tried to play some Brutal Doom/Project Brutality on an old laptop and it struggled a bit. It really depends on what project we're talking about, this one doesn't seem light, but I guess that it could run on small systems, depends on the amount of particles I guess ? (from what I've seen, seems like that's the kind of stuff that's very taxing on gzdoom, but I can't say for sure)

If you can run Brutal Doom or Project Brutality, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to run this
