Actually, educated lads and likewise responsible adults know that is not far enough; if you can smell the fumes, they are there. And they were present and had an odor near the door. If you want to smoke next to gas fumes at a station, let me know which one to avoid it when it goes off. Even Google tries to talk you out if it, and we know how many risks Google does not care about at all such as making u-turns on a highway or wrecking into a retirement home as a "safe" shortcut:

First, she's standing at much more than 3 feet.
Secondly, at this distance, these vapors are dissipating and mixing with the rest of the air. The only way I could see them still ignite would be if there is a leak or if maaaaany peoples were pumping gas at the same time (more than the gas station should be able to handle), but if it is still a fire hasard at this point, I think you'd have bigger problem. (PS : ok, it is illegal, but the ignition hasard is not there, not at this distance)
