Nintendo subpoenas Discord in likely attempt to sue the person behind the Pokemon "Teraleak"
In late 2024, GameFreak was breached, and the person responsible for it was able to access well over 1TB of data from the company, including beta builds of Pokemon games, and even a working unfinished prototype of the still yet-unreleased Pokemon Legends Z-A. The leaker slowly released the contents of the leak over the course of a few months, though they remained adamant on not uploading Legends Z-A until the game came out. Whenever they uploaded content, they made mention of staying anonymous as to remain safe from Nintendo's legal team.
And for good reason, as Nintendo's legal team is now on the case. Nintendo has filed a subpoena within the US District Court, to Discord, requesting the address, name, and phone number of the person behind the leaker account. The leaker, known as "GameFreakOUT" had a Discord server where they were uploading and sharing the infringing materials to hundreds upon thousands of users.
There is a court precedence for Nintendo and Discord leakers. In 2019, a John Doe who uploaded an early copy of a Pokemon Sword and Shield guidebook was eventually brought to court, where they had to pay out $150,000 in damages over releasing pages of the guidebook prior to release. In that situation, Nintendo filed a legal complaint before even knowing the identity of the leaker.
