Of course the Soviet Union committed atrocities and many mistakes, but communism is not defined by the Soviet Union for it has existed before the URSS and exists today in many different forms, unlike how Fascism is defined by Italy under Mussolini and Nazism by Germany under Hitler.
Communism isn't even inherently authoritarian.
There are millions of communists in the world and most of them aren't apologetic of the current/historical implementations of Socialism and recognize their mistakes.
However, it forces people into a style of life they may not desire, abolishes property and extinguishes competing or contrarian political projects and ignores personal freedom.
Libertarianism is the only political system that allows individuals to live according to their own values without imposing those values on others or having others values imposed on them.
If you want to live under a communist system, that’s fine. You can form a group, acquire private property, and organize as you wish within it.
