Installing Rock Band, Just Dance, and Guitar Hero DLC on Wii

NOTE FROM @SaulFabre: This tutorial IS NOT MINE, I've restored this tutorial from the original author of this document from the original Google Docs document, and provided again to GBAtemp.net by me if anytime you want to see it in a live website such GBAtemp. So, If you want to do the steps from this tutorial, DO IT UNDER YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!

Thanks to the website Wayback Machine for archive this tutorial. This made me easy the search of this tutorial. :)

THREAD:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rock Band, Just Dance and Guitar Hero has downloadable songs that you were able to buy and download when the Wii Shop Channel was up. Back in the day, people would install a small WAD, and then they could get whatever song they wanted for free. Since the Wii Shop Channel closed, this is no longer possible. There is a new way to install song DLC, follow this tutorial to do so.

The process to do this is different from installing a WiiWare or Virtual Console WAD. Instead of installing the WAD to your Wii (which will not work), we will use a tool called wad2bin that will convert the WAD to a format you can install directly on your SD Card. Please follow these instructions carefully and then you can use the DLC. It’s a long process, but it’s fun.

Also, if you are wanting to get DLC working with Rock Band 3, you can also install Rock Band 2 DLC for use with that game.

What you need
Instructions

Section 1: Preparing

1. Get the WADs that you want in the folder these instructions are enclosed in.
a. “Big WADs” contain WADs with all the DLC, but they are large. For Rock Band, these come in multiple parts. If you want to use the big WADs, make sure you have enough storage space on your SD Card.
b. “Split WADs” contain WADs with individual songs. This is good because you can pick and choose what WADs you want to install.
2. Copy xyzzy-mod to the apps folder of your SD Card (and Wii Mod Lite if you don’t have it already).
3. Launch xyzzy-mod from the Homebrew Channel, and run it to dump some keys. These are unique keys that are required in order to use wad2bin.
a. This only needs to be done once, if you want to install more WADs later, you don’t need to run the tool again.

Section 2: Patching IOS
  • If you load your game you want to use DLC with using the Disc Channel, follow the steps in Section 2.1.
  • If you load your game you want to use DLC with using a USB Loader, follow https://wii.guide/cios to install the optimal cIOS if you haven’t already.
Section 2.1: Patching IOS for Use with the Disc Channel

You do not need to do this if you’re using a USB Loader. For each IOS listed here (IOS37, IOS56, and IOS57), if you patched them once you don’t need to patch them again.

1. Launch Wii Mod Lite from the Homebrew Channel.
2. Go to the IOSs menu.
3. Select the IOS corresponding to your game.
a. If you want to use DLC with Rock Band 2, select IOS37.
b. If you want to use DLC with Rock Band 3, Just Dance 2-4 or Guitar Hero, select IOS56.
c. If you want to use DLC with Just Dance 2014-2015, select IOS57.
i. Just Dance 2014-2015 is known to have some strange issues where the DLC doesn’t work. We have managed to get it to work on USB Loaders.
4. Press the A Button.
5. Select Install IOS.
6. Select the revision corresponding to your IOS.
a. If you selected IOS37, select 5663.
b. If you selected IOS56, select 5662.
c. If you selected IOS57, select 5919.
7. Press the A Button twice.
8. Press Right on the +Control Pad.
9. Press Down on the +Control Pad.
10. Press Right on the +Control Pad again.
11. Press the A Button.
12. Select Download IOS from NUS.
13. Wait for it to finish. When it’s done, after a few seconds you will be sent to the previous menu.
a. If you get a screen saying “Exception DSI Occurred!”, try this process again.
14. Exit Wii Mod Lite by pressing the HOME Button.

Section 3: Making the WADs

This section needs to be followed for every time you want to install songs.

1. Insert your SD Card to your computer.
2. Open wad2bin.
3. To the right of “Path to SD root”, select the “...” button and set it to the root of your SD Card.
4. To the right of “Path to keys file”, select the “...” button and select the keys.txt file in the root of your SD Card that xyzzy-mod made.
5. To the right of “Path to cert file”, select the “...” button and select the device.cert file in the root of your SD Card that xyzzy-mod made.
6. Fill in the title ID corresponding to your game.
a. Games
i. Just Dance 2 - 00010000534432
ii. Just Dance 3 - 00010000534A44
iii. Just Dance 4 - 00010000534A58
iv. Just Dance 2014 - 00010000534A4F
v. Just Dance 2015 - 00010000534533
vi. Rock Band 2 - 00010000535A41
vii. Rock Band 3 - 00010000535A42
viii. The Beatles - Rock Band - 0001000052394A
ix. Green Day - Rock Band - 00010000535A41
x. Guitar Hero: World Tour - 00010000535841
xi. Guitar Hero 5 - 00010000535845
xii. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock - 00010000535849
b. Important
i. If you’re using the USA version of your game, type 45 at the end of the ID.
1. For example, Rock Band 3 would be 00010000535A4245.
ii. If you’re using the Europe version of your game, type 50 at the end of the ID.
1. For example, Rock Band 3 would be 00010000535A4250.
7. Only if using Rock Band 2, select the “Use nullkey” box.
8. Select “add wad” to install one WAD file.
a. Or, select “add folder” to install a folder of WADs.
9. Select “run”.
10. Make sure that it created a folder with .bin files in a subfolder of /private/wii/data/ on your SD Card. The private folder needs to be at the root of your SD Card.
11. Move the WAD file starting with “00010000” and ending with “bogus.wad” to a folder called “wad” in your SD Card.

Section 4 - Finalizing

This section needs to be followed for every time you want to install songs.

1. Launch Wii Mod Lite from the Homebrew Channel.
2. Go to the WAD Manager menu.
3. Select the folder on your SD Card called “wad”.
4. Highlight the WAD file starting with “00010000” and ending with “bogus.wad”.
5. Press the - Button.
6. Press the A Button, and then press it again when it prompts you to.
a. Ignore any errors.
7. Now in the menu where you were before to select WAD files, highlight the same WAD file again.
8. Press the A Button, and then press it again when it prompts you to.
a. Ignore any errors.
9. Load the game you made the DLC for and test it out. (If using Just Dance 2014 or Just Dance 2015 with a USB Loader, make sure you're using cIOS 249 installed with https://wii.guide/cios )

When you're not running games from a CD, you have to run them from an external usb device. You can't run a game from a SD card and try to run a DLC from the same card.

Also I wrote above that for RB the region of the console is important. And DLC should be made for the region of the console. And for GH the region of the game is important.

About the deluxe version... IMHO there are a lot of glitches and crashes. So I just took the regular RB3 and added a cheat to fit 3000 songs.
Ah. So games on usb stick, dlc on SD. Will just a normal usb stick work?

Region wise, console bought in the UK, dlc labeled as EU. I've not seen any UK labeled dlc so I assume EU would work.

Yeah I have had a bunch of crashes on Deluxe so I've already scrapped that off. What's the cheat to expand the songs list?

Thanks for this info!

Wrapping my brain around this.

Putting together a Wii Guitar Hero / Rock Band setup for my nephew. This setup is on WFL, and after testing multiple times, GX cannot accept responsibility for this.

I will not go into many details, GX simply does not work for this in my experience. I am referring to GX and WFL current/latest releases as of 2025.

Again, this is my experience and results working for me in NTSC region. PAL region could be different.

This is my 3rd trip down this brutal endeavor, i swore i would never travel but i am here again and made edits to this post.

---

My results for DLC...

Guitar Hero World Tour DLC simply does not work for me.

Guitar Hero World Tour (Import) DLC works!

Guitar Hero 5 DLC works!

Guitar Hero Warriors Of Rock DLC works!

Rock Band 3 DLC works!

Rock Band 2 DLC works!

---

There is no limitation of SD size, i am using 128gb SD for Rock Band 2 and all DLC is playable through Rock Band 3.

There is also no limitation of content, over 1000 DLC will been seen without any issues using Rock Band 3, using Rock Band 2 and Rock Band 3 DLC.

---

I am no expert but i suggest you remove your setting file(s) for WFL or GX before running this DLC setup.

Or you can completely start either loader from scratch and proceed to get best results. In my experience WFL and GX need their way. In other words, only use ONE.

The OP directions work, do not attempt to connect to store or any other silly business, simply follow the instructions.

Warriors of Rock will cover all GH DLC
Rock Band 3 will cover all RB DLC

Rock Band 2 DLC must have the "NULL" ticked AFTER you have given the appropriate hex code..

If you are getting the expired/ out of date error, remove your settings.

Last thing that has been said many times by others, the DLC must be on SD obviously, the Wii .wbfs must be on USB.

I'm getting the error message that says "Add on content is out of date and cannot be installed to the Wii's internal memory." Do you have any idea how to go about fixing this? I have been struggling for HOURS to get things up and running and I feel like I'm so close but just can't figure out this last step lol

For RB2 dlc, follow the instructions. Enter path for SD, enter path for keys file, enter path for cert file, then enter the correct RB2 hex code with 45 (USA) or 50 (Europe) at the end of hex. Then tick/check the "nullkey" box and add your wad file. Finally click run and let wad2bin do its work.

When it is finished you will have 1-4 wad files wad2bin created on the root of your SD card, put these wads inside "wad" folder. Use any wad manager YAWM ModMii Edition, Some YAWMM Mod or Wii Mod Lite to 1st uninstall all the wads, THEN install all the wads.

Thank you for the detailed response. I managed to figure this out shortly after commenting. For anyone who comes across this in the future who is running into the same issues I had, I'll break it down so you don't have to spend hours on it like I did.

If you're playing Rock Band 3 and trying to add Rock Band 2 DLC, follow the guide but make sure to tick/check the nullkey box in wad2bin. The guide almost makes it seem like you only have to do this if you are going to use the DLC on Rock Band 2 itself, but no. Even in Rock Band 3, you MUST tick the nullkey box when importing the Rock Band 2 DLC songs in wad2bin.

Keep in mind that the DLC HAS to be on an SD and you HAVE to play the game from either the disc or a usb drive. And if you are playing RB3Enhanced, you HAVE to put it's files on the SD card as well while keeping the base game either on the disc channel or a usb drive.

If you follow the guide and at the end you see the message "Can not save to the Wii's internal memory", go back and redo the wad2bin section. You likely made a mistake when installing the bogus wads. If you moved multiple songs at once, you likely had multiple bogus wad files. The guide only accounts for having 1. But if you have more than one bogus wad file then make sure to put them all in the wads folder and do the install/uninstall/install process with each one of them in either Wii Mod Lite or YAWMM (I used YAWMM, myself). Another side note is that the guide tells you to grab the bogus wad that starts with "00010000" however yours may be slightly different. If yours has one less 0 at the end ( "0001000" ), don't get hung up on that detail and just move all the bogus wads to the wads folder anyways.

If you run into a message after turning the game on that states "Add on content is out of date and cannot be installed to the Wii's internal memory" then you didn't check the "nullkey" box in the wad2bin portion of the process. Go back and redo that and make sure it's checked. That fixed it right up for me.

Last thing is I didn't actually follow steps 2.1 of the guide personally and I am playing this from the actual disc itself. That's not to say you don't need to follow this step, but if you've done extensive modding on your Wii or vWii (vWii in my case) in the past then you've likely already got everything you need in these steps since the most up to date guide has you install the IOS and cIOS needed during these steps.

Hope that helps save some of you time who get caught up on the simplest stuff like I do!

@indominus_B

I was actually typing a response to you when you posted:) Glad to hear you got everything working. Thank you for your follow up response above. I think anyone reading both our posts will realize this is working and that SOB nullkey box is most likely causing their issue.

thanks my friend.

well, i've done that guide to the letter, but when I load the game, start game, a loading bar appears top left screen, "loading new downloaded content". then the game freezes (orange led type of freeze). yep i've let that screen frozen about a hour, just to be sure.

i'm using d2xcios11Betav2, like modmii recommend. dont know if means anything.

using usbloader gx 4.0 test version(march 2025). also tried with cfg usb loader. tried both cios base 56 and 57 (d2x). same freezing results.

and yes, game is on usb, and all other things are on sd.

i tried copy the contents (private folder) of my sandisk 64gb sdxc to a 2gb corsair sdhc and the game also freezes. will try other dlcs/wads to see.

maybe i should have bought xbox360 or ps3 instruments...wii is a pita to mess with theses things.

Looks like ecerything is correct. Make sure you tick the nullkey box After you enter the hex "Parent TID". Not 100 % positive it is causing your issue though

I would suggest deleting the save file for Rock Band 3, it could be causing issues. I am running everything though Wiiflow Lite without issue and when trying to use GX with that same working save file, GX gives me a corrupted save error and asks if i want to overwrite. Of course i do not. If starting with a new RB3 save file does not work, try using WFL to see if GX is the culprit.

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to install Rock Band 2 DLC for Rock Band 2 (not Rock Band 3) for use in Dolphin. I have my NAND dumped from my real PAL region Wii and installed it in Dolphin.

I installed the Generation 1 Songs (sZAP) for Rock Band 2 to the internal NAND (not SD, because there is apparently a 2GB SD size limit for Rock band 2 and the songs don't fit on the SD card).

Now when I launch Rock Band 2, I get the following error: "There was an error indexing add-on content. Please visit the Music Store and Re-download an item of add on content"

I don't know how to proceed. Can anyone point me into the right direction?

Thx!

Sorry, i cannot help you here. I have no experience with RB or GH through Dolphin. Perhaps @SaulFabre can help, he knows the Dolphin emulator and using NAND through Dolphin, dare i say as well or better than anyone.

I tested RB3 through latest USB CFG 70r78.13 and my save file works fine with all DLC working also.

I removed my old settings for GX 3.0 rev. 1282 starting fresh and using default settings. Only edit was changing SD Card Mode to Off which must be done. Now RB3 and DLC is working correctly through GX as well.

I want to mention again, i am using an original 1st edition NTSC USA Wii with 4.1 firmware and the Wii i did for my nephew was as well.

I have tested with 3 separate SD cards all working...
256gb Samsung
256gb SanDisk Imagemate
128gb SanDisk Imagemate

Also tested and working for USB are...
2tb Western Digital My Passport
32gb SanDisk Cruzer Glide
8gb Kingston DataTraveler

May i ask: wich/ how many dlc are you using on rock band 3. Last thing i did was got it to be on The list. but, when opening it, it shows license error. Maybe problem with the bogus installation. Tried with modmii l, yawm mod, yawm modmii edition...my wii is 4.3, later model (with gamecube inputs)

I honestly don't know how to proceed.

I have 450+ DLC from both RB2 and RB3, so total of around 925 DLC. 12 of those are Iron Maiden tracks and they all work for me.

I do have 8 DLC that do not convert but have not pinned down which DLC those are yet...

I also added (or tried to add) 7 additional DLC today but the limit of total songs including DLC is 1000. I previously thought it could exceed 1000 but was incorrect.

Edit: i looked back and see you posted Judas Priest, not Iron Maiden, sorry about that. I do have many Judas Priest DLC installed as well... @almmiron

So I installed a custom song for Rock Band 3 (Just 1 song for now to make sure things are working properly). I got the appropriate bin files after doing the numbering correctly for everything (the song and meta folders, the .dta file) and using RB3WiiPackTool. Moved the bins over to the sZHE folder on the SD card. But when I boot the game it recognizes the song and says it can't save it to the internal memory. Since the process is different than adding DLC songs, I'm not sure where I went wrong. Does any one here have knowledge on what could have caused this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wish i could help but i went the opposite direction creating GH mods.

Frets on Fire links are still alive, but many are not. If you take the time, you will find the needed source files.

Use GHOST (2009) , follow instructions with 1 major detail, drop the "folder" not the "file" in later step.
I used 2 different tutorials, very similar but confusing, because neither made it clear.

When or if I succeed in creating a mod for GH, i will leave detail how to.

Is it possible to install the DLC in the HDD? My SD Card isn't that big and I don't think all the DLCs will fit. Thanks in advance!! =}
not possible

For custom songs we have custom way to get them to the SD
download first from the CON song from https://rhythmverse.co/ compile to Wii format you have these days a tool called Nautilus (before it was c3contools) , now it is in wiiformat, check the metadata file it should hold the correct foldername, rename the file to become the next in line of either sZEP/sZFP/sZGP or similar (just make sure to have the correct folder) then you have the RB3WiiCustomsManager make sure to use correct keys, correct folder name in metadata file and correct numbering, convert it and you should move it to the correct folder on the Wii, start up the Wii run the bogus file once more, this will trick the system to look for new files run rb3 and you should see the song being loaded into the Wii system

The attached document is sort of the instruction, many steps but it is possible and easer than 5 years ago
