I just got done installing a modbo on another ps2 slim I had laying around.

I swapped the laser a few times, but it seems that I have been getting bad lasers from China because they both struggled reading scratched discs while the scratched disc works on my other two playstation 2 consoles.

My Ps2 reads in region back ups(although it struggles) and out of region original games, but I cannot get it to load a back up from a different region. The laser was sitting at 500 OHMs by default and I am starting to think that the lasers they send out aren't new.

What points on the chip control region free backups?

Could it be that my soldering is the issue, or is it more likely that the cause is a bad laser considering that region free OG work as well as ntsc back ups?

Read these. They explain what points do what.

Also, your laser might not like having low resistance.

On one of my slims, I spent 30 minutes dicking around with the DVD pot lowering its resistance until I finally said fuck it and turned it up instead. Turns out, that particular laser prefers high resistance. Spent another 30 to 45 minutes adjusting it all the way from 2k ohms down until I got to a sweet value (with no FMV skipping) of about 1.6k to 1.8k ohms.

I just read this, but there is no mention of back ups working but region free back ups not working.

Yeah that still doesn't mention the difference in connections between OG region free games and region free back ups.

I got an out of region back up to play. For some reason the batch of lasers I got isn't good and the laser turned out to be the issue.

What is weird is that the same back ups work on my other consoles.

I have a scratched PS2 game and I noticed that good lasers can read it while bad lasers give a dirty disc error.

not that, some psu like those corsair rm series stock cables have very big knicks that make it impossible to fit in there
