It has been going a long time. One of my "how cool is technology" books from the 50s describes the efforts of the early trans continental phone line ships having to constantly re lay cable as the gutta perch they covered it in was seemingly adored by various animals (some worms/eels). Will see if I can find it but I do have several of those books.
