The Little Mermaid. Is it getting flak because of racism, or because it's yet another remake?

I really like the choice made for Ariel, Halle voice fits perfectly with the character and she is an outstanding artist too. I'm really excited to watch the movie even. What i really hate tho, across these classics remakes, is that some characters are completely ignored or replaced by a "realistic" version of themselves which i don't get at all, since it takes away their charm completely, like Simba, Flounder, Sebastian and many others. I would definitely much rather be able to recognize the characters easily, which back then was possible due to their more cartoony look, which i always loved! So yeah, i think that's my only nitpick about this. Human characters make sense to me being human, but talking fishes, lions and whatever, should still maintain their original more cartoony look, otherwise they are just some fish, just some lion, just some bird. (but this is just my pov)

Some people hate The Little Mermaid because of the existence of black people.

I hate The Little Mermaid because of the continual remaking and recomodification of cultural touchstones for a quick buck.

We are not the same.

You're the same bloke who self-identified, unironically, as a Socialist on another thread, right?

Wokewashing garbage. Too many morons exist for "voting with your wallet" to be a thing sadly. That and it being another remake. Deserves all the flak it gets.

I disagree. I think Bud Light would also concur. Target lost more than $10 billion for setting out displays with tuckable crotch swimsuits. That's kind of massive. This is going to have a much bigger impact this June than ever before. I am certain of it.

More conservatives will be emboldened to speak up about their beliefs after seeing the reactions to Bud Light, Target and Disney. A lot of people who were afraid to speak up before will speak out now, and it will snowball.

As a man who enjoys chaos, I am looking forward to the shitstorm.

It's temporary and entirely performative. The corps know that, long term, the outrage has no legs. I think most of the conservative grifters do as well. This stuff is cyclical. They'll all go back to drinking their Bud Light as soon as something else shows up to draw their ire.

I don't know if I agree. I think this time, there is some momentum behind it. People aren't quite as afraid of being cancelled as they were before, so opinions they "presented" in public might not be how they truly feel, and there is going to be a shift.

Conservatives are going to stop pretending and lying and acting like they support something that they actively oppose, and there will be a paradigm shift. It only got this far because people were too afraid to speak up.

Do you remember the reaction to Finn and Rey when The Force Awakens got its first trailer? Or GamerGate? Or... literally any other "Get Woke, Go Broke" controversy in the past decade? The people who get offended by this crap have never shut up, let alone been "afraid" of speaking up.

whiskey tango foxtrot!!!! what in the hell is that song!
I had to go listen to it, myself.

Dear. Fucking. Christ.

This is the worst Disney song ever. Ever. This is the single worst song to appear in anything Disney has ever done.

I was never a fan of Awkwafina before, but this cemented it. Nope.

Kind of like... the LGBT folks angry at J.K. Rowling because she does not want a man who has testicles to compete against women without a single Y chromosome in their entire bodies in sports competitions? An opinion that has NOTHING to do with the books she wrote?

Kind of like that, maybe? We see how much impact the boycott against Jo Rowling accomplished. So, maybe you're right.

Ffs the BBC article already got locked because of rampant blatant transphobia. Can we not have that here too?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.
