Nintendo issues rebootless update for firmware 16.0.3

dsdadsdsa.png

An incredibly minor update was sent out to Nintendo Switch systems in the form of a rebootless update for firmware 16.0.3. The exciting content within this slight patch is just a simple change to Nintendo's bad words list, including some removals. For players in Japan, "adhd" is no longer marked as a bad word. Atmosphere and all homebrew should continue to function, and the current firmware version number remains unchanged.

The word retard (I'm not going to self-censor myself) did come from mental retardation in English, but in other European languages the word "retard" is also used for different reasons albeit not really used that much (maybe except in French since that means "delay" and similar definition in Portuguese, and the Spanish have "retardado/da" for slow development of their age, etc).

If people want to talk about issues they can't censor a word and expect a real discussion to happen. But a real discussion in 2023? That can't be right!

Gay did use to mean happy in English.
When I was growing up we used the word "gay" as slang to describe something of low quality.

Well, the word literally pretty much has only one way to use it, and you got it wrong.
sorry, but which word?
Ass? You have a sexy ass! Wow, you are such an ass
Dick? Wanna see my big dick? Omg you really are a dick!
Because yes, there are words with more than one meaning ;)

Did you know that the word "vegetable" has sexual connotations?

The word "veho" has similar connotations.

I also live in Quebec, and I have never seen or heard someone using the word "gai" with the meaning of happy. I know it's probably one of the definitions in the dictionary, but it's just not used in that way, probably for fear of being misunderstood with the other popular meaning. If people mean "happy", they would use "content" or heureux"... mostly "content" in Quebec.
well, we actually do use the word gai in the meaning of happy exactly for that use
When someone wants to use gai as a slur to insult us, lot of us will say something like "Of course I'm gay, it's a beautiful day today, there's no reason to be sad"

I did, you understood, such as anyone else in this conversation. We have a conversation here, so your complain is really nonsensical, you just want an excuse to say the word. Which is fine if you are not applying it but don't pretend there's not a conversation and everyone else is dull not to understand it.

Also

in Portuguese, and the Spanish have "retardado/da" for slow development of their age, etc).

In Portuguese, and you know this as well as I, it has never been a medical term, in this context it's an English import of the r-word. The word existed outside of context but wasn't applied as a slur or to describe a mental condition before exposition to American media. You won't find it in any XX century Portuguese dictionary.

Finally
Gay did use to mean happy in English.

Gay is not a slur. People who think homosexuality is a bad thing use it as a slur. And yeah, words are adopted in different sense. It was meant as a slur for prostitutes and men who had multiple sexual female partners before, then was adopted as a slur for gay men after yes, all part of the mean spirited human natured I referred above. Thankfully it dropped the negative connotation as homosexuality stopped being seen as a deviation from the mainstream society.

I already told you which word. The word "literally". You stated "there is literally no other way to use these words (ass and dick) other than in a sexual or mean way.", when there are other ways to use those words that are not sexual or mean. I never said anything about no words having more than one meaning. lol. Like, huh???

ok, how can you use "ass" or "dick" otherwise than in a sexual context or in a mean context
And, as i said in my post, of which you erased a part of it btw, don't involve that damn Richard....

Erased part of it? Dude. What?????

Anyway. Ass can be referring to "an animal of the horse family, which is typically smaller than a horse and has longer ears and a braying call." And dick could be used in something like a person describing a penis problem to a doctor, or anyone really, and it would not be of a mean or sexual nature.

well, yea you erased more than half of it, starting where i said that people would talk about that damn Richard
As for the animal called ass, I admit, I didnt know that meaning of the word :O
Now thanks to you, I will have to make meme thread in the EoF where I ask people to show me some asses :)
As for the word dick, used in the context you are talking about, it is still sexual way. The person will be talking about his penis. Isn't there something more sexual than genitals?
is he talking to the doctor about something sexual? yes
is he sexually excited when talking about it? I doubt it

When I use it as a slang i.e., "that is gay", I'm using it ironically from the word gay (happy, joyous). It has nothing to do with the other slang usage, for homosexuality. People seem to forget that.
This is critical.
Most people immediately jump to the conclusion that it is being thrown as an homosexual slur, when it has other connotations.
This is really... REALLY prominent in spanish-speaking countries (at least in North America), where expressions like those (or others that are considered foul) are labelled automatically as hateful when people use them 90% of the time in other contexts, but I guess FIFA disagrees.

Sure thing. I guess you speak to your doctor in a sexual context. More power to ya. lmao.
