Two states would rather celebrate the life of a traitorous slaver than the life of a man who fought for racial equality and class consciousness. So no, it's not whataboutism, it's very much relevant to the topic at hand. We've made a lot of progress, but we still aren't all that close to realizing MLK's dream. Electing Obama broke a lot of racists' tiny brains, but it did not magically cure our divisions.
The only reason why anybody voted for Obama was because he was half black. That's straight up racism right there.
