The Rouge Review

Hey guys, since my life is almost entirely void of content I would go on the internet to read, I decided to dedicate this blog to a half-assed review of various Rouge-likes I play. I tried something like this a long time ago and it sucked, so lets give this another shot.

So for the first one im going to do is the post-apocalyptic survival,

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead

This rouge-like isnt heavy on story, basically, its the day after tomorrow and the world has ended. You were able to survive the intial cataclysm, however, now you must survive in the ruins of mankind. You have to eat, drink, sleep like most rouge-likes, however, you also must maintain a high moral, a balanced body temperature and stay healthy. It also uses what I like to call "logical realism", meaning if you fire a gun thats not silenced, it will make a sound, zombies will hear and come and eat you. If you shoot a door, the shot will break and go through it. Wood can be set on fire, and falling hurts. Things like that.

Lets get down to brass tacks shall we? Cataclysm, like most rouge-likes, operates on a perma-death basis, you can also recover things off your dead body as another character, along with reclaiming any shelter or vehicles. Basically, a persistent world.

The game has a TON of weapons, ranging from your little brothers baseball bat, to broadswords and katanas, to hunting rifles to prototype fusion weapons, which can also be modified with things such as suppressors and bi/tri-pods and on top of that, some guns feature different firing modes and ammo-types.

Combat is solid, zombies and animals are the least of your worries (well, Zombies have horde AI so they will mess you up in large numbers if your not prepared) with enemy types ranging from massive insects, cold heartless robots, horrifiy mutants, the strange and monstrous plant-life and the most dangerous of all, super-pro no-scoping human survivors who rob you!

During your travels, you can also encounter different locales such as FEMA shelters, cities, groves, forests, nuclear plants, mineshafts and some even crazier locations!

Dont think for a second this game is going to be a quick grind. Some of the most basic skills take weeks to master. Building your first car can take months, getting the supplies to be able to will take longer, way past the expected lifetime of your character.

To put the cherry on the sundae, it also has quite the modding community, in-fact. This game started out as a mod for the original Cataclysm! (ill include the link for the original so you can see how much was added)

As far as the games playability, its a bit so-so. If your using an old rig your going to run into a few problems. Such as crashes on world loading and data left over from your last charcter (such as low morale if you died horribly)

TL;DR
This game is quite fun and hard. Its packed with content that will keep you playing for hours, however, it also takes hours to reach most of the games content so it demands a bit of commitment and your going to die, A LOT.
