‘Temp has changed - what do you notice?

Hi!
I have mentioned it before, this isn’t my first account on the temp.

Back in my early teen years I used to have millions of different usernames and email addresses.. cuz you know it was cool creating new email addresses back then and having multiple MSN accounts lol

But I remember, I was around here first during the slot 2 NDS flashcart era.

I remember how helpful, kind, respectful and awesome people were when I asked questions about the M3 DS perfect.

The biggest change I noticed is how quickly people jump the gun. This forum has several sections and sub forums for different purposes. If someone asks a question that has been asked a billion times, you don’t need to be volatile and rude towards them. In fact, you don’t have to reply at all if you don’t want to. Why not let someone else reply who feels helpful and wants to reply?
I understand it can get annoying and repeatative. But think about it, you just don’t have to respond if you don’t want to. “If you got nothing nice to say, say nothing at all!”

Oh and I remember @JPH , @Bonemonkey , @Hadrian , @acegunman @xcalibur

Many many many older active users.

So what do you think has changed the most?

I have been around since about 2005/2006ish. I know there are people on here who have been around since launch.

@BORTZ lol what happened with JPH?

The last thing I remember was his poor quality front page news stuff. It was suspected that he got hacked but turned out he wasnt lol

@Chary adding to what you said, the world in general is getting more hateful, more entitled, and more harassing. We truly live in dark days.

I remember people were divided among which Flashcard to get. It wasn't even in a bad way. People would vie for which one was better and offered more and which one was more cost effective. Now it's all about "CFW vs Gateway" on 3DS and there's a small dividing line starting to rear its ugly head in the Switch section.

@Nerdtendo which is ironic because we started coddling the newer generation.

^And even then, we had fewer people with superiority complexes who belittle those who do not own the same flashcart. I mean, sure, we facepalmed a lot at people who bought one of the many unknown R4 clones and asked about it AFTER the purchase but we all helped each other out for the most part. That and the fact that people were at least open to buying flashcarts. Nowadays, it seems as if spending $5 to crack the 3DS wide open is too much to ask :\

I actually joined this forum because I had questions about the R4. Back when their download play was broken.. :o Was greeted with much better hospitality than some of the newbies of today. It's why I stuck around. I was never good with names, but there were some pretty amazing people. Back when raulpica and mthrnite were still around. Speaking of what happened to Raul anyway?

I will have a soft spot for this forum, but the sad truth is that it's just a ghost of its former self. That's not to say there aren't meanwhile conversations and good people still around. Just few and far between.

I still kind of miss the Member Number. :P

I've been a lurker since '08. Yes it's changed a lot both for better and for worse (@ earlier replies mentioning the ROM release list, oh yes, we need that back) but in terms of the latter there is nothing quite as bad as all the talk about the Temp getting worse. It's a very strange echo chamber sort of thing (much as I hate that term), but I think this site could actually thrive if people let others be and not take every breath as a chance to talk shit about A) the site itself or B) some poor bloke who made a boring thread about something that's been answered a million times.

In fact, regarding B), my favourite old Temp tradition was the way people would usually just respond with a LMGTFY link. Happened to me once in the days of old, made me laugh my butt off and learnt a lesson along the way!

We're doing just fine people. Nothing stays the same forever, all anyone can do (about the Temp but also in a more general sense, I suppose) is to continue to act in a manner that they would like to see more of.

Change is inevitable, doesn't mean it's always welcome. The temp needed to grow, and it has. It still is. There's nothing wrong with that. The issue lies in a general mindset. Or at least, it's becoming more and more vocal. Just the toxicity of one section or the other. Generic assholes that treat each thread like it's a troll thread.

People are going to complain, that's a given. People are going to complain about the complaining. We're going to see more threads from people that are excited and don't search. It is what it is. It was this way back then, too. Just not as bad. I've stuck around this long and I intend to stick around even longer.

I really miss the old release boxes. They always inspired me to find new games, and made me see things I would never have seen otherwise. Title screen and an in-game screenshot was perfect to get me interested :)

But, hey, I'm a supervisor now.. so the forum has never been better than it is right now ;) :P haha

I think the LMGTFY was acceptable until everyone decided that the next 60 posts will be the exact same thing. I dunno. I feel like a little bit of tough love (if you can even call it that) can go a long way. I mean, I learnt about forum decency the hard way and I am grateful for that experience :P

Site is not as friendly as it was, a lot of the user base are pricks.

I joined in 2003, back then it was nice. People had to invest a decent amount into a flashcart to play and yet it remained civil for the most part. Game not working on your chosen cart, no problem. Someone would happily help, even if it was just to tell you, you have to wait for a patch or whatever. The biggest argument I can really remember from then was over whether pogoshell makes up for the shortcomings of the f2a.

Compare that to now, ask for help on something not working, if you're not using the latest and greatest method, then some tosser will just bang on about not using your current method, doesn't matter if it's actually the cause of the problem. People don't like a specific method/flashcard whatever, troll every thread about it, that's if you don't get someone trotting it to drop the amazing insight of "maybe you should buy the game".

@ShawnTRods JPH was a a child who had no idea what to do with power when he was promoted. He should have never been in power in the first place and it went to his head.

Remember I was a very very young temper myself. But I remember him acting out of line a lot. Even as an 18 year old with almost no internet edique, I knew he was trouble. Looking through the mod logs from long ago show that he was a favorite for a while but was questioned more than once on his performance. Then the whole front page thing and his removal. I am not certain but I am pretty sure he was behind one of the hacks that stole a lot of data from our password cache.

There's a lot more snowflakes, which makes discussion relatively non-existent. Can't say anything without it hurting someones feelings.
But that's just the world we live in, not really GBAtemps fault.
The rampant entitlement spewing from children around here definitely shines through as well though. Luckily most of them end up shitting the bed and just 'leave' (IE: lurk) to fester in salty discord swamps without directly interacting with the community (which frankly, is the best outcome).
