Hello, after watching several Youtube videos, I decided to get an Optiplex PC in order to upgrade it into a budget gaming PC. From what I saw, it seems that i5-4590 is a popular choice, but then there's the i7 variants (i7-2600 for example). So, in the long run, which one would you recommend to obtain, i5 all the way, or go for i7?

i7-2600 is 4 cores 8 threads, and i5-4590 is 4 cores 4 threads, i7-2600 is three years older than the 4590, as for cpu goes i7 would be better.

OK, so I compared them using this website, and when it comes to benchmarks, there's little difference. So what does this all mean? Should I just pick the i5-4590 in that case?

Your comparison is bad though as you compare a 2010 cpu to a 2014 cpu, if you compare that to a i7-4790 then the i7-4790 would win against the i5-4590 due to multi thread.

Now that you mention it, I've also seen some i7-4790 PCs being auctioned on eBay. I'll keep an eye on them; if they end up being above my budget by the end of the auction period, I guess I'll have to stick to i5-4590.
