CXMB works, just make sure you get the 6.x version and only use 6.x theme files.
ISO and CSO files should work if they were patched/decrypted properly. Some games that could have had custom patches to work on lower/older firmwares might not work, so make sure to get "universally decrypted" or "clean" ISO/CSO files.
Once the temp hack is running, you can use the PSP-Ident homebrew to identify the exact motherboard just to be sure before applying the 6.60 CIPL perma patch.

Or you can just go 6.20 and be safe, since it's perma patch works on any PSP model that can run 6.20 OFW in the first place.
Install 6.60 OFW via the updater from http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/psp/pc/index.htm->run the 6.60 pro-c installer(it will exit into temporary cfw)->then run the cipl flasher. How would I go about getting from 6.39 pro-b7 to 6.60 pro-c? including the ofw. whats the exact steps I am on a psp-3000 and I don't wanna mess it up. Here is a pic of my psp when used with psp-ident thingy.

Sony hasn't released an update for the PSP in over a year.
Any of them, but the 1000/2000/3000 line (the original type) is the most common and easiest to get ahold of.
Any PSP 3000 from the store (so the most common ones now) should come with 6.60, the latest firmware, which can be immediately hacked, and will run all modern homebrew and all PSP/PSN games.

Well, assuming its dead.. Should I put 100 bucks down for a 3000?He did not say that.
