Hello and good morning/evening/night, I currently need help on unpacking and packing .zzz files.

I've found a game, called "Kenshuui Tendo Dokuta" which I managed to rip its content thanks to Tinke, because I am planning to work on a translation for it. However almost all the files were on that .zzz format.

Navigating through the forums I've found BatchLZ77 and tried to use it, however the remnants are always in a ".decompressed" format.

To be totally honest I don't know how to proceed after this. If anyone has experience with that file format their help will be very grateful. Or if someone knows how to use BatchLZ77 also let me know.

If there is another tool to pack and unpack, let me know too.

Many years ago I do recall some people looking at it, though I might be confusing it for the then untranslated trauma center sequel. If it was that though then I am remembering something about it being a lot of graphics as text which would make for a few hard go of things to translate (it is OK for a simple puzzle game or something, nice even, by lines and lines of text for something of a visual novel is a different matter).

Anyway if it increased in size that much then it was probably compressed. Next step most do is look at it in a hex editor, tile viewer and the like to see what they see.

Heyo I'm back after learning about CrystalTile for Jet Impulse's fan translation.

Yeah, I'm examining the files and using LZ77 to uncompress and see through CT's hex for something that might help me.
Surprisingly, there's no actual text to edit.
I've seen through a 2010 post that the text is composed of tile files and I'm trying to extract said files so an edit can be actually made, at least in photoshop.

Do you have any clue on how to extract them? So far my attempts are unsuccessful.

The r/roms megathread has a decrypted copy that is in .bin format instead of .zzz

Cool! Will try to check that out. Do you have a link for it?
its pinned on r/roms. I dont think I'm allowed to provide links. Just be warned the decrypted files there have the .zzz files stuck in them. They do work but they are innaccessible and not decrypted. Only the header is decrypted

oh nvm internet archives took them all down :[

Okay and... have you managed to save such files? Could you provide them through Mediafire or similar file hosters?
