Doesn't change the fact that they're still ATi graphics cards.

That's not the same. Because did said company change the name of all its existing products? No, and AMD didn't do that either. Say Nintendo changed their name to Bollocks. Would that make us all say "Well, I'm gonna play with my Bollocks Wii and Bollocks 3DS."? I don't think so, and Bollocks will just release a new version of said product and call that Bollocks Wii 360.

If they'd made hardware and you still had one of the HutchWhich phones then yes. It doesn't work when you're dealing with branded hardware -_-

E.g. Let's say I had a Laptop made by a company called "Esus" or something. They got bought over by Sony and started making computers under the Sony brand. Would I suddenly have a Sony Laptop?

I'm afraid he's right, man. They're AMD Radeon now, not ATi. The name was ditched.

Unless it's a legacy card, it's an AMD card.

TheFreeDictionary tells us that legacy means the following:
Electronics & Computer Science / Computer Science) (modifier) surviving computer systems, hardware, or software legacy network legacy

Surviving computer systems and or hardware and software, eh? So what, did all those graphics cards automagically get a new name stuck to them via a 9000th dimension? User: "I looked on my graphics card and it now says "AMD Radeon 5770" instead of "ATi Radeon 5770"!" No, I think not!

Edit: perhaps I should understand stuff better, this only proves Foxi4's point.

I have AMD Catalyst Control Centre installed. It says I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650. That enough proof for ya? They were manufactured and produced under the ATI name therefore THEY'RE STILL ATI!!!

Jesus Christ, I just said that legacy cards are still named ATi because they were produced back when ATi was a separate company.

That card's 2 years old. It's a legacy card already.

To clarify for everyone who doesn't know what Legacy means and didn't feel like checking the dictionary like Berthenk did, Radeons produced nowadays are branded as AMD, legacy products are called ATi, products that were produced during the time of merger may or may not be re-branded to AMD, since they may or may not use the exact same driver as the new AMD cards. It's a cosmetic change anyways.

it doesn't have to be legacy to be ATi, just hs to be produced while ATi were still a separate company.

*facepalm* So what you're saying is...
If they were made under ATI's name: They're still ATI cards
If they were made under AMD's name: They're AMD cards.

Basically what I was saying the entire time. If you've got a card branded as ATI then its an ATI card. It hasn't had a magical name change. Also you never mentioned that it was a card 2 years old or older. Pretty sure this card isn't 2 years old though, the 5xxx series was only the last generation of them but it was still manufactured under the ATI name therefore is an ATI card.

ATi was taken over by AMD a while ago and they were still a separate brand from AMD so this doesn't make any sense.

i meant before they stopped producing "ATi" cards and named them AMD instead. Like what Jamstruth just said

Remind me when I said otherwise. In fact, I said that you were right.

ATi was taken over by AMD a while ago and they were still a separate brand from AMD so this doesn't make any sense.
The last graphics cards ATi did was the HD 4xxx series. Then they got taken over, however the Market wasn't ready to accept such a sudden change in names so they kept using The ATi logo for another year. In other words, AMD made the HD 5xxx series but still used the ATi brand for those that didn't know ATi no longer existed. From the HD 6xxx series, they're finally putting ATi to rest and just using AMD.

As for the driver names, there's a double standard caused by confusion from the third party developers. The Windows drivers should be using the AMD brand, whilst third party drivers go either way. Everybody knew there'd be this kind of headache for peop,e to make the transition, but really... It happened over 2 years ago, so it's about time people got used to it.

Anyway, this is off topic (not that this thread even has a real topic).
