You Ever Regret Your Name?

Hah, my username is quite silly. When I created my account here it was just to ask a question and get some help, so I used the same throwaway username I had for years.

Now that I'm more active on GBAtemp I kinda wish I could change my name to something more fitting, but I guess it really isn't that important.

Not your real name, because you didn't choose that, but rather your online handle. I used to go by "Joomla12", which got shortened to "Joom" by other people that I interacted with. I chose the name because "Joomla" is the Ethiopian term for "excitement", and I had no idea that a CMS with the same name existed at the time. Using this name, though, led to thousands of spam mail and weird Skype requests asking for "Joomla!" 0days and premium content. I blame this on the fact that I released a CS4 keygen under the "Joomla12" moniker. I wasn't part of a scene group at the time, so I just used my name. This caused me to regret the choice, so that is the cause of this thread's fruition.

Joomla in Arabic means (sentence) جمله.

I've had a lot of usernames across my time on the internet, and I regret a handful of them, but I finally decided on "Stray"/"StrayGuitarist" because I barely knew my biological parents, I'm a guitarist, and I'm... a furry, and once I had, it felt like the most comfortable I'd been with an online moniker. Whenever I'd play a show and had a chance to introduce the band, I'd always introduce myself as "Stray", and it's become so ubiquitous with me that a lot of the friends I have in person call me by it, too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only other username I feel just as comfortable with, or proud of, was my Xbox Live Gamertag; VagrantCargo102.


But I figure I probably might as well actually say something somewhat relevant.. So I'll mention one username I REALLY regret making.

It was for an old MMO, and it was "dman3021". The 'D' being from my real name, and 'man' being.. pretty obvious. Y'know, D-man. But every fucking person thought I misspelled "Damn".

So I would get called "Damn".

But, y'know, you learn from your mistakes, et cetera, et cetera, I'll be sticking with "Stray" from now on.

Hardly. And it's more of a stupid grievance than a regret.

I started using this nickname (Taleweaver) somewhere in 2004 or 2005, when playing UT2004. Gave it some thought beforehand, and never regretted it since. Except perhaps...since UT2004 is the sort of game that requires quick reflexes, the not-even-that-long-name was usually abbreviated in texts to "Tale" or "TW" (which used to be a local abbreviation for an older locally famous rock concert (Torhout Werchter), which was cool in a rather subtle way ). All in good faith, of course.

Not that long after that I pondered over to a Dutch forum that had nothing to do with gaming. As it'd be a bit weird to sport an English gaming nickname, I just went with a shorter nick: "Wever" (which I still use, btw). All was fine at first. Still like the name as well (apparently it's also some kind of small bird).

Little over a year later, there was this local politician called 'Bart De Wever' trying to tell us that Flemish and Wallon Belgians were all different, and that the Wallons were living off the Flemish. This was mid-zeroties, so I expected everyone to just ignore him. That...didn't happen. Next election his little political party went together with a rather large one, so it got elected that way. When in government, they became the media's favorite because they brought divide into areas where there was none (basically, they tried - and to a degree still try - to separate Belgium). So their political influence and popularity grew. It's now over ten years later. Bart De Wever is now Antwerp's mayor, and he's been called "the actual prime minister of Belgium". On my end, however, things evolved from "that guy is trying to mooch off of my awesome personality " to "no...I'm NOT a fanboy of that guy. In fact, I've got opposite political views than that guy. Can we talk about something else now? ".

Luckily, by standing by my name (and personality), I only have to explain this to people once.

I’ve had plenty of usernames over the years, most of them were way too long and way too cringey. This one is much better, but unfortunate that I had to butcher it with numbers straight in the center ;(

Kinda. It was supposed to be just MicmasH but I put _Wii on the end because I never thought I would stay. The day I go to change it, someone took my username about an hour earlier! So I at least got dissasociated with Nintendo and now it's just MicmasH_W. Which is fine

Ah, I wish I had choosen a different name when I registered. That's stuff of the past I no longer want to be associated with.

You would do that just for the username? In any case try contacting the members in purple, you have to do that if you want to delete the account or change the username anyway.
