Don't bother with upgrade via DVD.

Bell just released some beta code for YAOSM that will have every feature now from every modchip released so far, plus some.

SMG fix
Dual Layer support
LED support
GCN and Wii originals and backups
Support for pretty much any decent quality media
AUDIOFIX!
Most configurable speed options of any modchip
Region Patching

No other chip is as stable and fully featured as YAOSM as of right now. If audiofix is not important to you, everything else is on release 1.9

For the audiofix version you Need a 12F683 or larger PIC, for 1.9 it'll fit on 12F629/75 or 12F635 chips.

Also fully compatible with Wlip. There is no reason to use anything else.

I'm actually looking forward to this. Even if I have to solder onto the wlip at least it isn't on the console itself. I can handle that one. The last time I tried to solder inside of a console it was a disaster (literally). I'll be watching out for a D2C version of the wlip for my console.

Apart from the fact that YAOSM can't upgrade via DVD.

I'm not sure why that's even an important feature. Bell said he MAY add DVD upgrade at some point if he feels it is an important enough feature and there is a high demand for it. IMHO, it's a pretty useless feature, although I have a flex cable sticking out of my Wii so I can update with my programmer like that.

Yeah but maybe not everybody has a programmer? Maybe not everybody wants a cable sticking out of their Wii? Maybe not everyone is like you.

I'm under the impression that most PICs need 12V for programming, meaning DVD upgrade won't be as simple as on an ATMEGA8(L)

"Not a useful feature?"

I've installed OpenWiis for idiots who have no clue about anything electronic. DVD upgrade is a must have for them.

^ And I am included in that group

wow this is really cool. i modded my wii w/ a wiikey and it really wasnt all that bad but this has made it even easier its crazy. go Wlip!!!

Yeah, you have to have a programmer to do YAOSM in the first place, so if you're installing it yourself there's really no reason to need DVD update.... Well, with Wlip anyway.

Of course there's a reason - plenty of people, myself included, don't want another socket in their wii and don't care to open the thing up every time the chip needs to be upgraded. I used the wait time to clear some of my game backlog and when OpenWii 2.3 was released I popped in the DVD and that was that. SMG ahoy.

Wlip is meant to eliminate all soldering for PIC chips and half the soldering for Atmega chips, it doesn't have anything to do with DVD upgrading or not.

they're stupid to wait this long, releasing it right now would be the smartest thing to do. Oh well, people will eat it up regardless if it's a present or not.

I'm going for the FlexPCB instead, I've ordered it from a UK supplier & it's being posted today, It's just a day late to get it before Xmas tho

I contacted the fine people at Wlip and they have posted that they are going to have a list of resellers by the 21st of this month where you can purchase the Wlip. Hope they hold to that date. Anyhow from what the web site reports is that they are going to have two versions. Version A is for the non cut legs on the chip and version B for the cut legs on the chip. (I think.) Anyhow in my email they told me they were working on a C version for down the road to work with the new chips (D2C). I not sure but I dont think it is going to be out any time soon. They seem to be a bit slow. They keep on pushing the date back for the version A & B but I hope that means that they are putting more R&D in to them so we have a better product that may stay clipped on and keep good contact. I think the Wlip is a very good Idea and I am going to order mine when it comes out. I lifted two pads when my solder job got botched. The drive works but I am not even going to try to solder on to the legs on the chip. It is such a small leg that with my luck I'll solder two legs together or pop the chip with to much heat. I'm good at soldering but not that good :-) I'll take the easy way out before I do any more damage.
Happy New Year all.
This was posted on another topic, but it is relevant here I think.

If you are talking about the Wlip for the D2C then I had this as a reply from them

"In reference to your mail, we inform you that we are working on d2c, but we can´t give you a estimated date for its release. Nowadays, we are really busy and Wlip for D2C won´t be finished at least in 3 or 4 months time. "
