Being the 8GB it is, I need some program that can cleanup unnecessary files in it, even just by a little. And since the internet normally has viruses in programs like these, I'm too scared I might download something that might screw up my computer. Anyone have any suggestions?

Or you could go the extreame method of just deleting it all

I assume this is windows 2000 or newer (older machines had the desktop folder (which then also means all the folders and the like that people usually stick there) in the the windows directory).

As others have mentioned and you seem to appreciate deleting stuff in there is generally not a wise idea if you do not know what you are doing. Automated tools can only go so far as well so I would suggest a reinstall.
Failing that look for old graphics drivers and backups thereof, they clock several tens of megabytes of late and often do not get deleted during upgrade (why it is suggested you uninstall when upgrading). Other drivers are not so bad but they can do things.
Fonts you do not use can go (which should also speed up the machine as they do not have to be loaded)
Restore points (which in my experience rarely work for anything you can not easily corrected by hand) can go.
Also you can try manual stuff like SequoiaView which gives a visual representation of the drive (which you can then limit to folders):

Temp files are also a good bet but these can get tricky.

Seeing how his Windows folder is 8gig, he has Vista...

No, you can't go deleting files in your Windows folder unless you want to format and reinstall.

Vista is 8gig, XP is 3-4gig, 2000 is about 700-800Meg

Yeah... I'm using XP, not Vista. This is why I'm concerned about it. I'll most likely just reformat or something.
