I think we really need a Computer Help forum for some people...

This ain't really a help thread, I'm just wondering. Has anyone found a good way to modify icons like you could in XP? Like...say...change the Recycle Bin icon from the Recycle Bin to...a Smily Face(Just for quick example.) I know it was quite easy in XP to do this, but what about in 7?

And on that same order, is it possible to assign icons to different extentions? (Like...an NDS icon that would show for all .nds files, instead of the default "not a usable extention" icon.)

Yes, I'm asking this mostly because I want to work on creating real themes for Windows 7, and it doesn't work that well if you can't change this stuff...

Well I guess you could just include a pack of icons for people to manually install. There's also a program called iconpackager, but I haven't really looked into that. You might want to check out this site, it has loads of advice on windows customization.

That's just it, I don't even know how to manually install them myself. That's what I'm trying to find out. I know how to make them, I just don't know how to implement them. Same with the .ico stuff. It's rather annoying, and I've used google to try, and the only ways I've found are ones were you have to actually mess with the files. Which I can never seem to get to work.

Hence, me asking here XD

Well as I said take a look at virtualcustoms.net, you should be able to find it there. Manually changing (one by one) is really easy. Right click the thing you want a different icon for, click the option change icon (or whatever it's called in English windows, I have dutch windows XD) in the properties menu. Then browse for the icon.

Here's a program called Types to add, delete & edit extensions on the fly (including icons). Don't know how it would help as to creating themes... Link

As for using the program, click on or add an extension. Click on the cog to the right of the bar. Then click on the icon tab. Tip: DON'T MOVE THE ICO FILE. Move it and the icon will become corrupt so make sure you have it EXACTLY where you want it on your hard drive.

Is there any way to add extension compatibility? Like for .nds files and such?

If you want to create an extension simply type it into the bar, click the green plus button then you can config it with cog button.

I tried, but when I add .nds and select the icon I want for it, it changes the name to .nd on the configuration window, and it still won't be displayed in the list of extensions.

I can show you how to add extensions manually but the method depends on which Windows OS you have. XP, Vista, or 7?

I'm on Win7 x64. Never would've expected that the OS actually matters.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
