As the title says I am attempting to do some Wind Waker texture edits but I am running into some issues. Firstly, there is a good number of szs files included in a larger .pack file. This contains most of the "important" files including Link's main textures etc. Other enemies and characters are loose szs files kept in the /object folder of the game.

The problem I am having is that I am using U Wizard to unpack the yaz0 szs files, then extracting the texture from the bfres using extract.bat. I then use GTX Extractor to convert to DDS, edit it, then attempt to convert back. However my file size almost always ends up different from the original, even though I am just attempting to do a simple palette edit. No matter if I repack a loose szs or if I insert one into the larger .pack file I am met with a freeze as soon as the object attempts to load. Any ideas?

P.S.: Link's model is in the /Pack folder contained in permanent_3d.pack

I'll look into this for you soon. I've actually been looking into modifying TPHD's textures as well (in an attempt to replace them with some of the texture packs available for the Dolphin Emulator).

I looked at tphd for similar reasons but didn't make it as far as I had with Windwaker. Any info you could give would be appreciated! I'm surprised there aren't more texture modding projects honestly.

Unfortunately, with TPHD I haven't been able to actually get proper textures. I've gotten to the actual GTXs but no matter what format setting I use, TexHaxU always produces a garbled mess.
That's probably what you were facing.

Well great. My computer is acting extremely weird, so I'm gonna have to pull everything off my drive and reinstall Windows.

I'll have to help you another time. :(

Weird as in corrupted system or weird as in virus?
Probably corrupted system. I definitely don't have a virus. I haven't used this computer in a long time, and I know it worked perfectly before, but I recently fried my main laptop, came back to this one, and nothing wants to work right.
  • Installers refuse to create shortcuts, and then proceed to delete all the files they just installed
  • Batch files won't load external applications
  • Python refuses to run scripts
  • Files refuse to open in their associated programs. I have to start the program, then load the file.
So on and so on...

Sure. Just that we've come a LONG way from Windows 95. Windows 10 is more than capable of maintaining it's own registry, and with registry cleaners they have a tendency to mark very important keys for deletion. Even the CCleaner forums highly recommend you use Ccleaner's registry cleaner only at a bare minimum, and pay VERY close attention to what it wants to delete.

That's all well and good but it doesn't really have to do with the thread... However if you had some input on the topic I'd love to hear it.

Nothing helpful sorry. I wanted to retract my post but I can't delete it and literally could not come up with anything relevant. Is there any updates for TexHaxU? Maybe there's a tweak for the file headers that would fix it.

I'm a little worried that there is an expected file resolution, so if you try using larger resolution textures the engine has no idea how to deal with them. I'd try seeing if it works by using textures the same size and resolution as the default and see if they work. I have no experience here, but if I was a Nintendo developer I wouldn't allocate more memory space than needed for the size of textures that I know the system can handle.

Well my initial attempts were nothing more than a simple palette swap, and my edited files actually came out as smaller than the originals for some reason. I didn't change any sizes or anything other than just the color, then immediately resaved and injected it.

@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

    To me that seems reasonable.

I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
