Testing everything else.

That the program runs, that it's making proper use of the hardware, that all the buttons are working right, that the game logic is working right, that the sound is working, that the gameplay is fluid, testing for non-visual bugs...

You know, all the stuff that's in current non-3D games that can go wrong.

Who cares? Simply buy this badass console.

What if someone like me cant afford every new peice of technology?
emulation is the only way.

Also for you other people whingeing over the 3D aspect are you forgetting the slider, i for one would love a 3DS emulator so i could play Kingdom Hearts 3D.
I don't care if its 3D or not, and many people would agree.
And if you really want 3D, the hacking community could always 'hack' the games to make them stereoscopic 3D (i hope thats the right term) and you just chuck on your old red and blue glasses.

Nintendo aren't gonna make it overpriced so you have nothing to worry about.

I don't really like emulation.
The only games i reckon that should be played on the PC is games made for the PC.
Such as Call of Duty and Sims 3

Did you just say Call of Duty?

I may be mistaken, but now that we know the CPU (Arm 11) im sure we can emulate that. The Android Emulator supports emulation of an ARM CPU (older ARM, but its works nonetheless). Also DMP is providing their own PICA emulator to devs. Its just an idea, and of course it will take a while, but it certainly is possible at this point.

I could never understand the idea of emulating handheld consoles on a PC.

OK, it might make sense for homebrew developers who want to test their stuff without transferring it to the actual device. It might make (some) sense if you want to replay a game from your childhood which only runs on some prehistoric platform like Neo Geo Pocket.

But how could you find any pleasure in playing 3DS games on a PC ? They were designed for a completely different device, with 3D screen, touchscreen, slidepad, accelerometers and specially placed buttons. "I want to test this game before buying it" - just read the reviews and watch gameplay on Youtube. "I can't yet afford 3DS but I want to play this game now" - the whole joy will be killed if you play it on your PC. And there's still plenty of good games for DS which I bet you haven't played. You don't have to play the latest Pokemon Shitty Brown / Urine Yellow just because it was just released in Japan...

Also, I don't think any available DS emulator is able to play all the games. And 3DS will be order of magnitude harder to emulate. Unless of course someone steals the emulator included in Nintendo's 3DS SDK (very unlikely).

I don't see why not/ What would they call it. The Wii's got dolphin.. why don't we call the emulator 'playstation3ds'

They will, after they hack the system itself. I suppose they also need to have a way to emulate the analog stick too. And of course, with our current technology, computers and laptops, running a 3DS emulator would be very laggy (if one would make an emulator that is). I personally doubt that this all can be done on the year that is released, including having a full speed emulator and excluding for the hacking part.

They had Dolphin emulating Wii (on a primitive level) only a year or so after the Wii's release. We had basic GBA emulators out within WEEKS of the GBA's release... Hell not much after the DS first came out either.

With the 3DS I think it will all depend on how fast the ROM encryption is broken... If the ROMs can't be decrypted and dumped, the emulator authors will have quite a bit of a problem testing out code... That said, the ARM11 is a common enough processor with plenty of data available to work from as well as existing pieces of code (hell, even DS emulators will already have a huge portion of the work done since the ARM11 is backwards compatible, only the newer op codes will need to be done on the processor point. Emulating the PICO will probably be the more difficult task). Once there are physical rom dumps available I doubt it would take long, a few months to a year before at least something basic was out.

Of course they will the 3DS graphics is weak IMO. Hopefully they name it xbox3DS.
What? 3DS is about on par with the PSP, graphics wise, which, admittedly, is a touch outdated for 2011. But do keep in mind, it has to render each scene twice.

X-Box comment makes no sense though.
