I have a r4i gold in my current ds xl. My friend is wanting to buy her grandson the 2ds model that dosent have the hinges. Would the same r4 work in it as well or will whatever firmware it comes with determine if it will work or not?

No, it won't brick it. If it's blocked by the firmware the console won't even recognize it.
It will recognize it but error when you try to boot it.
There are a bunch of R4i Gold carts that are all different, so you'll have to be more specific. The one you want (since it's one of the best ones on the market) is the r4ids.cn R4i Gold which will work if it's updated to the latest firmware. Older versions of the cart had to have a trace cut on the board after the firmware upgrade is performed though.

Ok I emailed r4 and this is the card they recommended for her 3ds. Hers is on firmware 11.4.0-37U. So from what I understand if I download the kernel etc. from that link I will not have to upgrade her 3ds firmware?

Do you have a link to the exact card that you have? You probably don't have to worry about the update depending on which one you have. as The Real Jdbye said,

Here is the card i have but she needs one too. When i say i contacted r4 i contacted [email protected] from the website r43ds.org. I can only find a r4i 3ds without the RTS like mine has.

buy one like the one you have, that email account is trying to get you to but one of their damned timebomed cards, look at the full list of cards on that page that kiiwii linked to, one of the timebomed cards is the one they are trying to get you to buy.
dont trust anyone that tells you that a card with an year written on it is fine, those are there so that they can ask you what model you have a deny you support and if you asked them why it suddenly stopped working they can tell you to just buy another one
Why would you email them when they're not affiliated with the site on your card? Also, you can get an RTS from nds-card.

There's nothing wrong with you getting the card you already have. Definitely get that card as it's proven to work and you can use it for NTRboot if you ever want to do that.
I can confirm that your card DOES work with 2ds, o3ds, n2dsXL all with 11.6. i've tried all those with mine.
Edit: The 3ds plus linked above is definitely a good choice seeing as how it's the same price but added functionality for a built in cfw entrypoint option.

ok i will look at it. I was looking at my cart and it references a website called www.r4ids.cn Is that a bad site? I have had it years and it still works great.
That's where you get your kernel from. Under downloads. It's on the site and it's verified as the legitimate card.
