PS3 might pass by the wii in a few cases :

- Everybody on nintendo's payroll dies overnight, not one wii is left to be found in the whole world, and zero wiis are sold anymore. In that case, it'll take the PS3 two years to beat the wii.
- Every wii owner ever returns their wii, gets a refund, and buys a PS3 instead.

Stop dreaming. The wii is today's Beanie Baby. Parents will FIGHT for it. Grandparents will FIGHT YOU for it. Young girls will FIGHT over your naked body just to look at it and play wii tennis.
Meanwhile, I haven't played Halo 3 in the last two weeks - partly because of the red ring, partly because the xbox bores me to death, and partly because of Metroid Prime.

In a way it wouldn't be bad at all for Nintendo that the competition is heating up again. I mean, it seemed that lately Nintendo got a bit of a laid back attitude. I guess that's not a good thing for creativity. Because of the fact that Sony is constantly finding ways to keep up with Microsoft and Nintendo the consumer can benefit from it, because all three companies are doing EVERYTHING to win. So I expect that Nintendo will come up with some new ideas so that they stay in competition. (Allthough I don't know if Wii Fit is the ultimate solution)

Nintendo said that they won't get complacent but it looks like they are to me, they still seem more focused on the DS which although thats nice it doesn't need it at the moment.

I will say that Innovation does have it's benefits.
But if the innovation is not practically used, then the innovation will end up in a flop.

Therefore, the Nintendo Wii has had it's fair share of consoles sold.
I mean seriously, we're using the PS3's numbers as a unit.

After awhile, people WILL get bored of the Wii seeing as PS3 has built in blu-ray technology to last it at least a generation.

THAT IS WHY[/B], I'm gonna spend these few years on my Wii before the fad dies down and I'll have to fork all my money over to Sony and Microsoft. I'm not saying it's definitely gonna happen but, I won't be surprised.

Well when you're winning, there's no reason not to be complacent. Except of course if you want to learn from your past mistakes and not let the competition take the lead again.

Actually Nintendo and Sony should switch mindsets, because Nintendo is the one with the empire to lose, and Sony is the one that can't really do anything more than it's doing to.

Nintendo should be the paranoid one doing anything to hold onto its crown, whereas Sony should be the one sitting back and just letting things take their course. In fact by being paranoid Sony has only hurt itself. The slander they spout on a regular basis doesn't make them look "cool", it just makes them look like poor losers this generation. And rushing games, no matter how badly you want sales, that's not going to help. Lair could have been a massive hit, but they pushed it out before it was ready and created a near universally reviled title. They should really be taking their time at this point, and approaching things at a slow and easy pace.

Theres just so much out on the Wii in the next few months and I don't see the PS3 taking over for a while. The Wii has basically sold on hype alone for most of the year, now its games are gonna sell it.

Also if this does actually happen, all Nintendo need to do is a price cut (which it can easily do seeing as its the only console making money) or some new packages/colours and it'll be back on top.

Hmm... It would be very silly for Nintendo to reduce the price, its already very cheap for the standard that the Wii is setting.

Even if the PS3 is going to last longer, Nintendo will keep on fighting and its going to take a lot for Sony to overcome it, especially with some of the great titles that is being released for the Nintendo.

I personally think the Wii is overpriced. Don't get me wrong I think their idea is next gen but the hardware isn't, its probably got the worst build quality since the NES as well. I hate to winge about Nintendo stuff being a fanboy but its hard to deny the truth.

I've read that it costs something like less than £100 to make each Wii. They make loads of cash off this thing, they even made loads off the GC.

I like going for the underdog

I bet the PS3 will overtake the Wii eventually but probably not for another 2 years or so. Sales for PS3 are going nowhere but up for the next year but still not likely to catch up to Wii.

Developers will get used to making games for it, the price will drop. Decent games + price drop = $$$

nintendo could cut the price a bit. it wouldn't kill them but I suppose they like their moneys

360 is still my most favorite console for the awesome amount of solid games. It's followed by the Wii because of smash bros and mario. PS3 is my least favorite at the moment but little big planet could change that, it looks epic!

I really don't see the Wii having much staying power for the next few years. Once nintendo has all its signature titles out, what else can they do? They need new franchises that are actually fun to play with decent online multiplayer, good controls and a challenging difficulty setting with lots of replay value.

Just my .2c. I've been wrong before though so we'll see

oh yeah: sony don't really need to worry about losing money luckily. they have all their other business to fall back on. they can stomach the money lost on consoles just like the x360 can and rely on software sales.

Apparently the attach rate for Wii is 1-2 game and 360 is 6? can't remember where I read that but I'd imagine the PS3 would be somewhere in between.

The Wii needs to be cheaper. There's a recent price drop of PS3 here in Canada. A 40GB ps3 is the same price as a 20GB Xbxox 360, if I recall correctly.

The Canadian and American exchange rates are about even (with Canada being in the lead at the moment), but I doubt Sony is pricing their products to our current exchange rate. The Xbox 360 pro (aka the 20GB model) is $350 in the US, and $399 in Canada (I expect the rates to align after the Christmas rush). Whereas if the the PS3 40GB model is $399 in the US (which it is), chances are it's closer to $450 for we Canadians. Bah, they need to adjust for the current exchange rate sooner.

The Wii needs a price drop. In the beginning, it had the advantage of being half the price of a PS3, but now, with all the price drops, you can get a PS3 for only $100 more. If the price of the Wii doesn't go down, the two consoles will be left competing with games alone, and we're left with the infamous graphics versus gameplay dilemma... only nothing is stopping PS3 games from having good gameplay as well as eye-candy graphics. The Wii needs a price drop.

However, dropping the price would have an "iPhone effect": early adopters would feel mugged, while prospective buyers would become distrustful. Keeping the price tells the world that everything is all right, all is going according to plan, they knew what they were doing all along.

£100 is $200, so Nintendo can't drop the price to $199 if they want to keep a profit (and I don't think they will want to forfeit ready money from hardware sales in favour of some shady prospect of bigger software sales with more consoles sold), yet any other price drop would make no difference. So let's hope they drop manufacture costs to $100 per unit.

And you think the PS3 has no games? Someone didn't look at both sides... IMO though the PS3 will win the 360 and the Wii in the end considering Ratchet and Clank, Oblivion, Resistance, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword etc those are all great titles. I have a Wii and I'm getting a PS3 really I regret getting the Wii since it has no games that I like..

There's a method to your madness. I hadn't really thought about the Wii PS3 price comparison before this topic. They really aren't that far apart anymore. Prior to this I had really only consider the Xbox 360's price point ($350 USD) which I expect to be lowered to $299 within the first half of 08 to compete with the Wii on a more direct level, and to gain a major advantage over the PS3. But yes, seeing it now, the Wii clearly needs a price cut. They need it from a value and competition perspective. It seems to me the console wars are about to get a whole lot more interesting.

PSP is starting to sell some units but there's no catching the DS and those crazy japanese that buy a new one each time a new colour is released

The PS3 really isn't doing all that great. Sony has been begging developers not to dump off projects for it. That is not good.

PS3 is the oddball this round. It's hard to program for, it's overpriced and many people are going anti-Sony. The lead that the other systems have over it is making the PS3 a hard-sell....to consumers and developers.

When will people get this off it's head? The PS3 is not overpriced AT ALL. The PS3 is actually very very UNDERpriced. The 40GB is the same price as the Premium 360 was and the PS3 offers a lot more hardware and software wise... When will people realize just because something is expensive doesn't =/= Overpriced.

Hard to say right now.. but I don't believe that will pass the Wii, specially with SSBB and Mario Kart coming early next year.. The PS3 might have some good sales when MGS4 and FFXIII come out.. but that's about it..

The PS3 is going much like the N64 in his days.. it was a good console, had 1 or 2 excellent games.. but it wasn't enough to compete against the Playstation.

As for the Xbox360, it is a good console, but it will never go well in the japanese market.. I might be wrong, but I believe that the main reason for that is just because the japanese market is very protectionist with their own products, occidental games never had success there, I doubt it will start now..
Do you people do any research at all to backup your claims.. If the PS3 has 1 or 2 games wtf happened to Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Motorstorm, Warhawk and those are all exclusive... If I add those and the 2 you named it's 7... What does the WIi have? Mario Kart...(Old jeezes), Mario, and Smash Brawl.... Wow 3 Games.. I guess by your marker 3 is bigger than 7 eh?

Where do I say that the PS3 has no games? I've seen what all three have to offer, right now I reckon 360 is better than PS3...right now. I prefer the Wii as I prefer Nintendo games, always have. The Wii is the one that seems to have the games that appeal to the masses.

Heavenly Sword, played that thought it was very average to be honest.
Oblivion, a 360/PC port of a classic game that was released ages ago.
Ratchet & Clank, never liked the series.
Warhawk, its pretty good.
Resistance, its good for what it is.
