Hacking Will the Gateway 3DS allow homebrew (N64 Emulation)?

The N64 used MIPS architecture and the 3DS uses ARM, so the 3DS will run it very slow(or worse than the PSP). The PSP uses MIPS, so that's why it atleast had some chance of running a N64 emu with playable speeds, even with its weaker hardware.
For smartphones, even though many use ARM, they have very powerful hardware specs compared to a 3DS. Still, the N64 emu for android is not perfect.

...True, plus and you may not agree...

The PSP is more poweful than a 3DS. People seem to forget that games on the 3DS run at a max resolution of something like 320x240 (rough total number, I know that's not exact). Wheras a PSP has a resolution of around 480x292.
Yes the 3DS has 2 screens etc, but when do you ever see high end graphics on both screen as the same time? ;) One is nearly always used as a HUD/2d overlay type thing.

The 3DS could never emulate an n64 at a playable speed.

The n64 emu on the PSP has been in development since the battle of hastings 1066 and still runs like crap....anyone with half a brain knew that was always going to be the case from the outset.

Those retards to develop that emulator increase the version number for ever commit that is made to the code. Meaning, (to the idiots here) that it isn't optimized lots over time...it means that they are just idiot coders who keep releasing instead of actually doing much work on it. A commit could be as simple as fixing 1 single line of code. They just have an OCD...Proofs in the pudding...after about 5 years of work...it's not substantially better than when it was first released really is it?

This.

Thanks, randomizer! I can't say I'm a fan of people making noise and creating false things, just for the sake of attempting to sound smart.

My pleasure. There are far too many people who think something can be done solely based on the fact that it's just a matter of "translating CPU code" or "squeezing every bit of hardware resources to run an emulator". Emulation doesn't work that way. ARM would need to be programmed to translate MIPS (N64) or PPC (Gamecube) in order for the DS to be "tricked" into running it. That right there is the basis of emulation, tricking one device into thinking it's something else, while emulating hardware using software.

That's a matter of opinion, more MHz or higher resolution doesn't necessarily mean it's more powerful. They're two completely different CPU architectures, have different GPUs, etc. We don't know what kind of emulators it can run once homebrew is developed for the 3DS. Take a trip back in time, the Sega Genesis had higher clock rate than the Snes, but the Snes was still faster. Why? CPU architecture.

All right, let's see a proof of concept for a Gamecube emulator on a DS. The hardware is far too limited, the CPU architectural difference (IBM PowerPC vs ARM), there is no dedicated GPU, you have to emulate the CPU, DSP, GPU and many other chips in a synchronized fashion, that simply cannot be done on the DS. To emulate a console in software, you need far more processing power than the original to even get started. Good luck with that.

Don't deflect with nonsense. If it's running at 0.00001fps, then getting sync isn't going to be hard assuming frame skip isn't used.

Don't need a POC, the weak hardware is no barrier to actually getting other hardware emulated in terms of being feature complete.

It's the emulating at a reasonable speed that is always the problem for developers porting emulators. Actually just making it work is very little of the equation.

Apples are apples, you only need one apple to make a pie...it will just be a small pie. That is concept of emulation. It's E-M-U-L-A-T-I-O-N...you know what that means right?

randomizer can get stuffed, he just posts for the sake of it and likes every post that matches his narrow minded ignorant view.

You, sir, know what you're talking about <3

Hahaha!

HEEEY! You know what's fun? Learning what you're preaching before singing! ;)

...tricked?

Never heard that technical term used in a discussion of emulation before.

Clearly, you're an expert on these things.

If emulation doesn't work that way, then how about you provide that bag of fairy dust your holding so we can do it your way?

The whole point of "porting" is so code can be run on different architecture, I'm not saying it would be pretty. But it would certainly be possible, even if totally pointless due to lack of power to emulate at a useable speed.

....I had to laugh "tricking one device..."...lol mate, seriously you literally are talking out of your rear end with that.

Code is ported into instruction set in other architecture, there's no "tricking" going on....lmao.

<snip>

Go clue yourself up on what "emulation" is.

Also clue yourself up on what "technically possible" means.

As long as you have enough storage, be it emulated or otherwise for emulating physical system RAM/video RAM, frame buffers etc and a device capable of outputting to display at the required bit depth/resolution....heck, even that last bit isn't essential.

We're just talking about the technically possible here, there's no reason why it couldn't technically work, and if it can't, prove me wrong without resorting to ganging up like a couple of loser goons, cute as it is.

"Emulation" You keep using that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Alright, Stop this fight! If you want to play a specific game, play it on its console. Plus its a better experience.
Btw, my house temperature just went up like 40° C because of the heat from the flames of this fire...

I wish it was 40 Celsius outside where I live, it's too cold now lol

And BTW, I wasn't fighting, I was merely correcting someone who erroneously misinterpreted the concept of emulation and he was the one getting up in arms about it, but okay.

its about 12°c at warmest here right now ;)

Thats not true. You cannot make a gcube emulator on the ds- it wont just run VERY slow, it wont run at all. That is just an analogy people on the net use.

Actually, the Dolphin team released it's emulator on Android and it's been ported to ARM, which is the exact same processor architecture as the 3DS.

As you can see in the video, it runs, it's just not playable. So on the 3DS, it would be even worse, like 1 frame every 20 seconds. Emulation isn't about being able to play games, it's about running one processor's instructions on another device.

Actually, this is called recompilation, which is done instead of emulating an entire processor you read and recompile instructions from one type of processor to another, However, it's usually done between same-architecture processors, ie ARM to ARM or x86 to x86. This is why the DraStic emulator is much better than all the others is due to recompilation instead of straight emulation. However, you still have to emulate the video, audio, and input as well, so emulating or recompiling the processor is only a first step. This is why disabling audio in some emulators increases speed is because you still have to emulate the audio.

First: Most phones nowadays are stronger than the 3ds

Second: It's fake. Dolphin CANNOT run on phones
