So I've been playing Pokemon Y lately on a retail cart running 7.1 emuNAND. However all of this bricking scare has me reevaluating my options, if I play on a "brickable" firmware am I still in danger if I only use classic mode for retail carts? If not what can I do now that won't risk or at least minimize my chance of bricking while still being able to play Pokemon on 7.1?

I'd be on a 2.0b2 equilvalent firmware because to run Pokemon online I need 7.1 emuNAND, which seems to be unsupported by 3.0

Dude, get the fuck off of the 3.1-3.3 firmwares NOW! Take your console, hold the power button on it until it's completely off, and downgrade to 3.0. 3.0 still supports Pokemon in classic mode.

Let's hope the damage isn't already done...

The first thing you should have said was what card you have. If you have a clone get off of anything that might contain the brick code ASAP! Maybe there needs to be a PSA or something to make things clear for those who own clone cards.

Lol yeah I got rid of them not long after the bricking shit popped up, I should have mentioned I'm not using them right now. It's just that my Pokemon isn't 1.2 so no online. Guess I'll just have to be patient for e-shop again.

Use GW 2.0b2 for your Pokemon Cart. Just leave it in sleep mode the whole time, that way (I think) you should be fine as long as it first boots up. That's what I've been doing with my GW cart ever since this whole fiasco has happened.

Hmmm could I be the victim of attempted sabotage? ;P

Or are these legit options lol?

Or you could just set the date to 1 December 2013 and see if the time travel does its magic.
could the Gateway kill clock run on some unalterable internal clock? Or is that not possible

I have no idea and I am not in any way encouraging anyone to test anything.

But of there are guys willing to risk their 170USD system, then they can go ahead.

Yeah, no, don't follow this method.

Yeah, it's risky. The main reason I did it was I wanted to finish playing my retail eshop 3D Land. The OP wanted a way to minimize the chance of bricking, I gave him an option. To be honest I think it's the best solution if he wants to play his game, because the way the bricking code works is on startup a number seed is generated based on the current date and time (NOT JUST THE DATE). Once you get that the risk should be minimized in theory, though of course there's still a chance of bricking.

I feel like it's a better idea to just use an older firmware for the time being, as I wouldn't want to risk a $130-$175 for a couple hours of play time before my system dies, no matter what the chance.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
