it does not matter, you can install the homebrew channel on any version Wii U. In fact, you should update it to the latest firmware (as of this post, 4.1.0) to gain extra features like using the gamepad as a screen for vWii and the ability to output sound over either HDMI, AV cables, or both.

I have read somewhere that you need a lower firmware at least for action replay.
You need to install first then you can update.

Action Replay? I thought there wasn't AR for Wii games. Anyway, with Ocarina/Gecko OS, cheats work just fine.
Yes there is for Wii games ofcourse but it works on WiiU depends on the firmware you need a option like settings and date or something.
Can you give me a guide how to install homebrew channel?

There are a lot of excellent guides in the Wii/Wii U hacking sections on these forums, they'll do a much better job explaining than I can ;)

Haven't tried it lately, but doesn't AR use the letterbomb exploit to attempt to launch? Settings doesn't exist in vWii to my knowledge for that exact reason.

you will need a Wii Remote and or classic controller still.

Pff :( I was ready to go get one now but.. i'll wait untill this is possible or..untill Fifa comes on Wii U again .
Are there any hardware limitations to use the Wii U gamepad as gamepad in vWii ? Like different communication protocols ? Wii games do not support the Wii U gamepad but maybe it would work by emulating a classic controller .

You don't need 4.1.0 for those features, any of the 4.x.x firmwares will do.

Not saying there's any known reason not to go to 4.1.0 at present, just that you don't need to go that high for just those features. Everything since 4.0.0 has just been the old nebulous "System stability improvements and other adjustments"
