My .mkv files lag in the beginning then audio and video are horribly off. I am on the latest version 1.31. Is there any solution to this? thanks!

It's a Wii hardware limitation; it has nothing to do with WiiMC. You can reduce the problem by setting Frame Dropping to "Always," but the Wii will sometimes struggle with videos that are encoded as H.264 (MKV, MP4, etc). The best thing you can do is try to limit yourself to videos that are standard definition and encoded as Xvid.

Sounds like you are trying to play something that is above DVD quality (480p).

Nope. Nintendo decided to be *$#-holes again and didn't include any kind of media player. Until Wii U mode (and no, running in Wii mode won't work) your only options are the Hulu/Amazon/Netflix apps.
