A countdown has begun on the Wiikey Nintendo Wii Modchip website, (currently has 37 days left to go). If anyone can shed some light on what this is about, we would love to here about it, or wait patiently for over a month.

I can't wait to see what this is...WooT

wiikey is pretty much obsolete now that usb support is out. only real reason to get 1 is if you wanna play gamecube backups. soft mods have completely replaced what hard mods once did.

Exactly, and I am waiting for Gamecube backups because that has great potential.

That would make the countdown expire 09/09/09, DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUN! They were established in 1999, is it a 10 year anniversary thing?

You'll be waiting a long time for a softmod USB GC loader, haha.

And no, softmods haven't "replaced" hardmods, look at how many of you novices are in this forum complaining about bricks after installing something you didn't understand?

personally, I'm hoping for a hardmod USB loader that will do both GC and WII from an NTSC filesystem. Hoping is the key word, anyway.

So naive!

Wii modchips stilll sell very strong. Wiikey v2s are sold by the bucket load to installers, and drivekey is sold to the end user for hassle free installs.
I've said it before, and i will say it once more. Most users on Gbatemp for some reason think that everyone in the world wants to be like them.
They want to buy a harddrive, softmod their wii after reading for a couple of hours, and keep reading uo on gbatemp every couple of days when something changes and they need to update something.

Both markets can exist guys. I know some of you are at school, uni, have no money...But a large amount of people that buy wiis are on on dual income 50k a year salaries. Sending 50 USD on a solderless modchip they plug and never have to worry about again is not that inconceivable is it?

I agree that softmods are awesome...but that doesn't mean that everyone wants to do it to their wii.

I can't say much about the countdown, but it will be a plesent suprise for the hardware lovers out there

Having my Wiikey installed years ago cost me £20, and I have NEVER had a SINGLE problem playing ANY game.

Beats softmodding for me.

Hardmods have the enviable fact that you can update your Wii without worrying about IOSes, 002 errors, loaders and all those things. You just put the disc in, update like with original games, and presto, the game starts.

Personally, Hardmod > Softmod. Because it'll always work on every revision and System Menu

um didn't you read what i posted? tales, ghostbusters, indy or g-force all have 002 errors if you try to run them without goeck os. and their not the only games. also your stuck at disc speeds playing mp3 on usb is a dream it's so damn fast. don't get my wrong i have a wiikey and used to use it a lot. but i evolved.

I'm pretty sure those 002 errors only exist when you have a softmodding wii and a modchip.

ghostbusters is an NTSC game
you have a PAL consoles
a wii modchip cannot make a wii 100% region free

I bought and installed a Wiikey about a year or two ago.
After installation, my Wii drive was loud when reading both retail and backup discs. Additionally, disc read errors made backups notoriously unreliable to the point of being unplayable. I have consistently had problems with my chip regardless of the media I burn on and regardless of the speeds I burn.

I gave up on backing up my games until I softmodded my Wii, which is easier, cleaner, and more reliable.
I suppose there are two sides to the coin, though.

If you update, you get no 002 error.
