oh yeah, that could be a problem. I'd wait for @Cyan to chime in then.

wait, you may be able to access it with usb loader gx. I think there's an option to boot homebrew within it, but I can't remember for sure. hopefully, you have that installed or we're back to square one.

Never used it before. :( so don't try reapplying smashstack?

sorry I couldn't be of further help. I'm wondering if all your issues are related. I've never heard of your problem before, so my suggestions are based on no experience with the issue.

You at least gave it a shot. They could very well be related. I'll do a bit more research on it before I try anything. And I'll post here any further developments

@godreborn in your opinion should I try to reapply smashstack over my current homebrew channel?

I've read all your previous messages, I'll just try to resume to see if I understand correctly :

- you can launch vWii (from vWii channel, or by pressing B at console's boot, right?)
- on vWii, game discs are working
- on vWii, mii channel is working
- on vWii launching any homebrew is not working (do you have any channel installed on vWii, or only the homebrew channel you can try to launch?)

- On WiiU, you downloaded or created yourself some wiiU WiiVC? that I didn't get a definitive answer.
eShop helper is providing pre-injected WiiVC games, please, don't use them. it might work for other users, but let's just not add possible issues to your problem.
just tell me if you generated the channels yourself based on Wii ISO and gamecube ISO, and if yes, how? (manually, wih script injector tools, which version?)

- on WiiU you installed some WiiVC. Did you install officialy released WiiVC? like xenoblade chronicles, Mario galaxy 2, etc. ? Any working game not involving hacking/homebrew patching?

- on WiiU, you installed a WiiVC Nintendont forwarder. (again, you found it or downloaded it on eshop helper, or generated it yourself ? which file, how, etc.)
- you have nintendont in the apps folder
great... which apps folder ? you all weren't very helpful not specific. Your SD card has TWO apps folders.
sd:/apps/ <--- folder for vWii homebrew
sd:/wiiu/apps/ <--- folder for WiiU homebrew

Now the question :
Did you try booting the vWii homebrew channel without anything plugged ? No HDD, No SD !
I suspect the issue is the SD card. but I want confirmation that you get or not a black screen without any SD card inserted.

Now an answer for one of your question :
uninstall or overwrite the homebrew channel ?
If you want to uninstall the homebrew channel, how would you have done it? please, don't use the channel/data manager of the vWii !
if you want to uninstall the HBC, you need to use the Hackmii installer, and select uninstall.

I think you can just select "install" (or reinstall if present) and it should overwrite it without the need to uninstall it first.

But please, don't uninstall or replace it yet.
let's do things in order ! please, wait for any of my answers and suggestion, don't try random things or you might make it worse.
I'm sorry, my answers won't be fast, it's midnight here, and I'm going to bed. tomorrow, I'll read your reply only after my work. expect a reply from me in 12 or 18 hours from now.

Nintendont is in sd:/apps/nintendont. In there is boot.dol and meta.xml. both from nintendont thread here at gbatemp. I can launch vwii both by launching from wii u menu and pressing b. I did install mario galaxy 2, same issue with that. I only have the homebrew channel installed on vwii. The only wii vc I have are super mario galaxy 1 and 2 from Wii U USB Helper. And I also got the nintendont forwarder from Wii U USB Helper along with wup installer gx2 channel on the wii u side. Wii u won't boot. with my flash drive taken out tells me usb is not present and can only turn it off. Same issue with homebrew channel without sd card.

I thought only Mario galaxy 2 was "official".
if you got Mario galaxy 1 and Nintendont forwarder from USBHelper, then it's a user's created channel, I wouldn't trust that.

Flash drive are incompatible. (even not recommended by nintendo)
Launching vWii without flash or SD shouldn't give any issues.
Launching vWii HBC without SD should not give any error message and not turn off. that's not the normal behavior. I find it strange to trust that report. there's no way vWii HBC tells or does that.

When I turn on the wii u without the flash drive the error message happens. With the homebrew channel on vwii, it just goes to the black screen, no error message. So maybe part of the issue is the flash drive then.

please, report everything correctly (with all information), it's hard to understand if I have to imagine things.
So, let's resume again (even if I probably don't know how to fix it, but it might make it easier for other users to help you).

When you turn ON the WiiU mode without the USB, you have an error message and you are FORCED to shutdown ? you can't even boot WiiU mode without the USB connected?
It shouldn't tell you anything nor force you to shutdown, as you can have multiple HDD with different games installed on each.
If there's an issue, it's because you installed a vital title on USB (something like ... CBHC ? it can't boot CBHC if it can't find it....) All guides a telling you to install to NAND, NOT on usb.
I both hope and don't hope it's that issue. If it is, it's bad but then we found the problem. if it isn't it means there's another problem.

Second, you said :
With the homebrew channel on vwii, it just goes to the black screen, no error message. So maybe part of the issue is the flash drive then.

You mean it black screens without the flash drive plugged? (I suppose, as it's what you said for WiiU mode) but it's still a little confusing.
please, mention BOTH what happen with and without the USB and SD card !

launching vWii homebrew channel from the vWii mode
USB + SD :
USB alone :
SD alone :
None :

what I find strange is that even official WiiU VWii channels are not working.
I suppose you installed them on USB ? (again, no real information where the game are installed, NAND or USB... not enough/proper report. You expect us to just know your setup)
if you use flashdrive to install channels ... just don't ! Even Nintendo website is saying "do not use flashdrive on wiiU".

Last edited by Cyan,
All my games are installed to usb. Cbhc is on nand. Homebrew channel is on nand. And the black screen issue only happens for vwii homebrew channel. When I turn off the wii u, then pull out the usb, then turn it back on, I get "storage removed error" I can try rebooting it at that point, leaving the usb out. So far launching vWii homebrew channel from the vWii mode
USB + SD : black screen
USB alone : black screen
SD alone :
None :
I'll also try moving super mario galaxy 1 to the nand. If it is the USB causing issues, I'll have to get an HDD. Will report back after school. I get home around 3 EST

This is strange you have the "storage removed" error if CBHC is correctly installed to NAND. something might be interfering, I just don't know what.

Do you have another USB device?
preferably an external hard drive, if not (if no other choice) even another flash drive.
you'll have to format it to WiiU format, so backup all your data first.

Let me know if Mario Galaxy works from NAND.
Some WiiVC channel injected with homebrew doesn't work correctly if located on USB, but official games should work. If they don't I guess the partition is corrupted or the device is not compatible.

So I got my wii u to boot without the usb. I just rebooted it after the error message. Now homebrew channel from the vWii mode:
USB + SD : black screen
USB alone : black screen
SD alone : works
None : works.
So it must be the usb. Super mario galaxy 2 works after moved to nand and with the usb out. No more black screen. even tried super mario sunshine built with Wii U USB Helper that I moved to nand, after taking the usb out and it worked. Any way I can get it to work if I format the usb on my computer, then reformat it with the wii u or no?

I had the same problem as Mikola. I'm on 5.5.2 with no CFW and only vWii Homebrew Channel (no forwarders). Only HBC are USB Loader GX, Nintendon't, and Savegame Manager GX. I also tried removing SD card and opening the HBC and got the same black screen. I then unplugged all my USB devices and HBC loaded normally. I had then plugged everything back in again and got stuck at a black screen.

My USB hard drive is in an external enclosure with its own power supply. After power cycling the hard drive enclosure I was able to boot HBC normally. I've never seen this happen since I set everything up over a year ago. This may not help Mikola, but might be useful for someone else with the same issue in the future. Good luck Mikola and thanks Cyan! You guys got me all fixed up!

Thanks for that report.

So, we can definitely tell the problem is your Flashdrive.
What I find interesting is that you could "move" the game from Flash to internal and it's working fine, which means the data wasn't bad or corrupted.
So, to my opinion it's an issue with the device going offline, being disconnected by the console due to low power USB. (you need a Y-cable for HDDs, you might need one for your Flashdrive too)

So, I suggest :
1. try a Y-cable to get power from 2 USB Ports
2. if not working, I doubt you'll fix your issue by formatting the flashdrive, as we found out the problem wasn't the data but the hardware itself. You might want to use an external hard drive instead of flashdrive, and certainly need a Y-cable (or use an externally powered HDD).

It all makes sense, given all the circumstances, thanks for your help, everyone else that helped too. Glad for such a great community. Long live Gbatemp!

You can use the brazilian method on 5.5.2 that's what I have. No further issues
