There's no installable CFW yet. [Insert disc and press A to install as system update type]
So, goodluck with that...

A portable Wii U would be AWESOME!

What if Nintendo made a console that you could play on the TV AND still take it around outside of the house? Imagine the Wii U Gamepad but it didn't need to be by the console itself! It would be crazy! It would really switch up the gaming industry.

I was imagining a Wii U dongle you just plug on the TV and that's no hassle , no docks, you don't need anything else but the console itself! That would be pretty neat!

An optical drive (actually, the one that came with it from the factory) is required to use the WiiU, although you can remove the actual laser/motors

Switch is far from what I thought the would do next.... specially with the Wii U Gamepad tech.. ZERO LAG Wireless display? YES PLEASE.
I would like that too but to save that portable size & weight we need to have CFW bootable from disc atleast. [Lift your Wii U and Gamepad at same time, you will feel its weight...]

Or atleast make it not check for optical drive. [Not having it prevents Wii U from booting as far as i remember?]

You also need a battery [Wii U drains alot so you're basically playing for 1h-3h] and space for a fan,
space for Wii U Gamepad parts & touchscreen. I don't think it's possible for now, maybe later when we will push Wii U to it's limits.

Yes as has been stated already the wiiu will not function if the optical drive is removed so unless you work out a way to fool the wiiu into thinking it is connected this project will not work.
