Here's hoping it isn't :x I'd enjoy a few more weeks of eShop access

Come to think of it, I think it's just an update for Sm4sh, not the system. I believe I heard that in the Direct, but maybe it's just wishful thinking

Same. if its a smash update, i'm ok with it, ill just update and be on my way. otherwise... i may have to take a hit. I'm gonna be one of the thousand others who streams mewtwo and i cant get left in the dirt

I can add stereo BFSTM downloading to Brawl Custom Music like I did with BCSTM, though it'll be more of a priority to me once file replacements are possible for everyone.

I'll send you a quickbms script I wrote for nus3bank once I get home. I came across some issues when running it on some SFX archives in Smash for Wii U, but I haven't looked much at it since then. It worked fine with every other NUS3 archive I've checked from other games.

Nice!

So what we have so far as to file editing from Nintendo's platform (BF files):
  • SARC archives can be edited with SARCPack, SARCExtract, and Yaz0enc (with minor hex editing to get padding right in the Yaz0 file)
  • Layouts use BFLIM, BFLYT, and BFLAN for images, layouts, and animations. diddy81 made BenzinU which is mostly complete (I'll have to test a bunch of stuff for him once we get this new Webkit exploit working), and BFLIM we can run through TexConv2 once we figure out the swizzling params needed to convert it into a gtx file (MasterF0x is messing around with that right now).
  • Text is (as far as I've seen) MSBT files, which blank documented forever ago from SMG2 (slightly updated, I can dig out my notes if anyone wants to mess around with it).
  • Shader data I don't wanna mess with but should be easily editable with Nintendo's tools from the SDK (until we rewrite them).
  • Sound is mostly editable, BFSAR and BFSTM are slightly modified formats from BRSAR and BRSTM.
  • Data storage is BYML and we've been able to edit that for a while.

I'm not sure, where did you get your info from?

Pretty sure they mentioned it in the nintendo direct that because of the changes to virtual console games that normally ran in vwii mode will be ran from wii u, something like that? Also there will be new options to display or play these games right from the gamepad, which will require an update. I can't remember 100% but I'm fairly sure they said it would be released at the same time or near the smash update, which is supposed to be on the 15th.

I don't know where the pessimism keeps coming from when the scene is clearly moving.

probably because the WiiU is a failure in videogame industry.

Though I see a lot of potential for homebrew.

People don't realize how much time and effort it takes to cultivate something like this--especially when it's a bunch of new (no offense) people trying to do their best and garner interest in a system, for whatever reason, the experienced and seasoned people really had no desire, past a basic challenge, to work on in any way, shape or form.

People also have very short memories. It took what? 2+ years to develop something for the PS3 and it wasn't until a paid solution was offered that things really got moving....the Wii U has had no such motivation, beyond a few rumblings.

Want to piss a bunch of hackers off? Release and charge for a piracy enabled, drm device when the same and more can be accomplished free. :)

I thought you sold your Wii U and left. Yeah, this device is MIA. Rumors pop up such as "I've heard they are working on it" as some friendly person said recently. If mn1 et al were helpless there would be no progress. Also, people say Hykem is well known.

oh one more question while I'm here this exploit still Anti-Piracy? just curious, just a simple yes or no would be preferred don't wanna start a piracy discussion like back on page 100 lol good times :P
Nah, as I told someone else on twitter, we're only obfuscating it so Nintendo can't patch it right away, once they do we'll most likely release the source for others to learn from. It's not a matter of piracy or anti-piracy, it's just a binary file you link in your compilation process (probably, not sure how we'll distribute it) and then run commands through. A black box for now, if you will.

I think you mistook my posting. I was and still am extremely upset at some groups and the way they handled certain things, however that has no bearing on this discussion.

My point simply was that the people working on it are working hard and it is greatly appreciated by many. Most just don't realize the amount of time and effort it takes for something like this, especially when it's a smaller group of people versus a large community working on it, with little to no help from outside sources.

It's not like anyone can use it at this point in time anyways :P Even when it is, why use an inferior version when it'll be rewritten with USB file loading and a bunch of fixes to make it work with any game
As I said before, better to keep it to yourself :P

I honestly don't see any harm in this leak. Sure its not the finished product, but it will allow other hackers and devs to start playing around with file replacement now before USB file loading is possible. This leak is spreading knowledge as opposed to wreaking havoc (the usual). Nobody in the general public (who cares about homebrew) is going to bother playing around with this over a local network anyways. They'll wait for the proper release. This leak will likely just help spread knowledge of how the file systems and RAM manipulation work on the Wii U :).

In most cases, I'm strongly opposed to scene leaks like this but I don't see this being damaging in any way so ummm proceed? XD. Also nobody will be able to cheat online with this either, as you can only get online on the latest firmware and the webkit exploit has yet to be ported (WIP).

Side Note To All The Pessimists: If you're so upset by the amount of time this is taking to develop proper homebrew, why don't you do it yourself? If you're so convinced it could've been done long ago, then why haven't you done it yourself? Because you lack the skills necessary to hack anything? Most likely... You clearly don't understand that hacking takes time.

The original Wii was a completely different story. Once code execution was achieved, you essentially had complete reign over everything. There was no kernel or true OS, just pseudo-kernels dubbed IOS's to help give software access to the hardware and to maintain a pitiful level of security etc.

The Wii U has a kernel to deal with as well as a beefed up security system that's seperate from that. Its much more secure than the Starlet ever was. The Starbuck runs IOSU on it which acts as a pseudo-hypervisor preventing a lot of exploits etc.

I'v been away and This thread is LONG.. could someone explain this cafiine thing to me?

Cafiine is the tool chadderz made to replace Riivolution for Wii U games. Basically, it patches coreinit's file loading functions to jump to our code so we can handle it (either loading over the network by connecting to a server you give it from socket.h or the file from disc/eMMC). It's planned to be rewritten (eventually >.>) with support for loading files over USB (hopefully) and making all the code compatible (since it breaks several games currently, including Wind Waker HD :<)
