Hardware Wii Remote losing sensor mid game

During games that don't use the sensor bar consistently, they seem to lose the cursor. When I aim the wiimote at the screen, nothing is there. I have to get up and get within a few feet of the TV and then slowly back up.

This only happens in-game. Not on the Wii menu or anything else. I do have generic sensor bar. Is this the sensor bar or because of the games? Is there a fix? Would getting a Nintendo brand bar help?

I have tried adjusting the sensitivity, but that doesn't help
