Is it possible? I've tried to get my wii to read any CD, even on Mplayer_CE but it doesn't seem to have support yet. Is it that Nintendo has somehow created a DVD drive that will ONLY read DVDs/whatever GC discs are, or is it that we haven't attempted to get that working. I'm also not just talking about music CDs, I mean like Data CDs with files on them too.

The Wii Drive is only able to read DVDs, though I don't know if it's limited by Hardware or Software.
    GC Discs are Mini-DVDs btw..

CDs and DVDs are read by different lasers, and the Wii doesn't have the one that reads CDs.

    Shame.

Are you sure they use different lasers? If I look at the dvd tray in my laptop, there's clearly only one lens. I'd imagine as long as the wavelength is smaller than the pits in the optical medium, it's simply a matter of having proper firmware to read the medium. Hence why Bluray players can read DVDs and CDs as well.

There are different lasers in Players capable of reading multiple formats that use the same lens. Remember the problem with the PS2 laser when they would stop reading DVD's but still read CD's and vice versa, This is because the corrosponding laser would go, forcing you to replace the entire laser assembly. Also if you were to take apart a laser assembly from say a PS3 and look at the laser PCB under a microscope, you could see the separate laser LED's.
