Hello and sorry in advance for the noob questions.

So I have an older Wii I wanted to homebrew so I can run an emulator. Now I did research on home brews an stuff an for every webpage I found with a tutorial every single tutorial was different. With varying amounts of steps. Some said just install xyz an your good. Others wanted for the same result 3 other programs 5 iOS versions an then this an that.

So basically all I want is to be able to run an iOS of fire emblem radiant dawn and monster Hunter off of a flash drive thru my wii. With minimal changes to the system. Don't care about looks I just want to be able to run the emulator thru home brew an load off a flash drive . But j still want to be able to use the Wii like normal via the disk drive for games an my Netflix app on it. And I'm wondering of someone with experience can tell.me exactly which programs an steps i actually need to do this. Cuz I don't really need the bells an whistles if you know what I mean.

So far I did the standard homebrew channel install.so I have the channel an it's all good via letterbomb.

I installed bootmii as iOS cuz I have one of the wiis that doesn't have the GameCube controller ports or memory card slots on top an it couldn't install booting as boot2. But i still took a back up.

So I'm wondering what I should do next so that I can:

-eventually do a restore of the back up if needed
-get a usb loader to work
-play radiant dawn an monster Hunter.

I have:
-updated Wii to current version before starting
-homebrew channel installed properly
-bootmii and a backup
-i downloaded homebrew yesterday from the site so i assume it's up to date
-ios58 is currently on the Wii i didn't touch anything yet with it
-and I have a rvl-101 Wii . No GameCube support or controller ports

Also bonus question after I install these things from the sd card do i still need that sd card or is homebrew am bootmii now fully on the Wii an I can erase the sd card. Am what format should the flash drive be in fat32 or ntfs or does it not matter?

Thanks I'm advance for your help guys .

Bootmii IOS can't restore backups without a gamecube controller (which you can still technically use - they removed the standard connectors , but the signals are still available inside the console), or of course an external programmer can be used

get a usb loader to work
Follow the Modmii guide, it's the most convenient one for starting from a messy/unknown software condition console

-play radiant dawn an monster Hunter.
Should work easily (from USB) once you get the CIOS and USB Loader set up (via Modmii)

what format should the flash drive be in fat32 or ntfs or does it not matter?
USB loaders support both FAT32 and NTFS (and WBFS but forget about that one), however since you said you want to avoid keeping a SD in the console, go for FAT32 (which can be used in the Homebrew Channel and some other homebrews... although some will only support the console's SD drive)

Is there an all in one cios i should use? Cause I've seen discussions of use this not this or install these 3 then some people say don't do that install this one an it does it all. Or a certain cios works better with usb than this one an stuff like that. Am from the looks of it the cios is an older version then the iOS I have cuz I'm on ios58 I think most guides say revert to ios22 or something or does the cios effects "stack" with the current iOS. (For lack of a better term)

Also forgot to mention I'm 4.3E . Dunno if that makes a difference or not

Only one (C)IOS is active at any given time, when an application loads one the previous one is closed...

Any CIOS, however, is made by taking one official IOS and applying some patches to it; therefore, you can make a different CIOS by changing the "brand" of CIOS and/or the base IOS

Nowadays, the best CIOS are:
IOS 249 = IOS 56-based D2X v8
IOS 250 = IOS 57-based D2X v8

249 is for historical reasons the standard IOS number for CIOS, which will be the default for USB loaders (and older homebrews may not give you a choice); if you have problematic games, switching to 250 (in the usb loader settings) will likely help

The IOS number is just a number, nothing forbids you from taking official IOS 80 (the newest one) and copying it as every other IOS number (aside from the fact you will probably screw up some software that depends on a specific IOS quirks); similiarly, while IOS 80 is the last one developed by Nintendo, it doesn't mean it's universally better than 58 (the only official one to support USB 2), for example - they're just DIFFERENT

Ah ok. That makes sense. Ill give modmii guide a shot an see how it goes. Is there a specific emulator for Wii games that you recommend that works with homebrew well an can play stuff like radiant dawn? I know for like gba games I prefer my boy emulator for example .

Also in the guide it mentions launching the cios an priiloader menthe other things via homebrew channel. My home brew channel is totally empty does that mean I need to Download those things to the sd card then the homebrew channel will see it at that point an I can then run it or does that mean I messed up my homebrew channel some how.

They're not "emulators", but the 3 main USB loaders are:
WiiFlow
USB Loader GX
Configurable USB Loader

I've always used the latter, but many people nowadays use the GX (because it also integrates with Nintendont for Gamecube, I guess?) - you can have multiple ones anyway, so don't be afraid of trying them!

Yeah, the HBC loads homebrews from the SD, from a FAT32 usb drive, or from a SD Gecko (ignore this one since you don't have Gamecube memory card sockets) - press "1" to select the source
You will need to put homebrews in /apps/{folder name of your choice}/{boot.dol or boot.elf}, although most of them are distributed with already the right folder structure

Ok cool thanks again man for the help. I always like to trust someone's personal experience over one of many conflicting guides . Anyone could write a guide an not really understand. I appreciate your help. :D
