Try putting it on a USB device?
Your iPod may not be compatible.

I could have sworn it said somewhere that ipods were able to be used as strorage devices...

they are, but u have to enable the setting in itunes first while its plugged in your PC. then once enabled u can use it on your wii.....or not lol. theirs loads of differnt things that are taken into consideration when it comes to the ipod considering that it isnt a generic hardrive.
