Well it is published by Destineer which usually means the game is bad but it is a port of an Xbox title from 2005 called Close Combat First To Fight.

Footage from the Xbox game:

That was actually a decent FPS game. Was it as good as Call of Duty? No not really, not even close. Was it a good time waster? Yeah it was, it wasn't a pain to play, nothing bad at all but I can't say I am aching to ever play it again. It was a lot less tedious than The Conduit which for some reason has fans.

From the screens it looks pretty much unchanged graphically from the original. Here is a "hands on" preview from Destructoid:

When you think of a contemporary urban warfare videogame, almost every one is going to think of, well, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. That's an amazing game, setting the standard for contemporary shooters. The Wii version, exists, yes, and any game entering the Wii market is going to compete with that.

So what do you do? Well, Destineer hopes to enter the niche ofmodern warfare stylings with Marines: Modern Urban Combat. It's a game from a company who has worked with the American military to create training simulations, so this is really a child of professional training tools. How does it stand up in my hands-off preview? Hit the jump for my impressions.

Creating a realistic military game is quite the challenging, especially when you place the game on the Wii. Destineer, thankfully, has worked in the past with creating products to help real-life marines train for combat life, called First to Fight. Marines: Modern Urban Combat, thus, is the resulting product of a true military simulation.

Some of the really neat features is how the squad can be commanded with context sensitive commands and controls. The way your squad interacts with knocking through doors and shooting targets is pretty cool, and their defensive columns squad movements show a certain sense of realism.

The AI, I've been promised, will be pretty intelligent, covering your back when need to and dealing with threats in a serious and authentic manner. Like in other FPS games, you can also command air support, and the constant threat of enemies can be dealt with in an intelligent manner.

What may or may not be a problem for Wii FPS fans is the speed of the reticule. Movement and control are slow, but I believe it is a conscious decision of the dev team. This game is supposed to recreate the actions of Marines, so hiding behind walls, crouching, and patiently waiting for your squad to do their part means that running and gunning is a no-no. Some people will hate it, but Wii-gamers with a realistic bent might like it. This is certainly designed to at least play realistically, so slow and steady kills the bad guys.

Unfortunately, I have to say that this is not the prettiest game ever seen on the Wii. Textures are muddy, flat and dull, and while the squad members and enemies look a little better, movements are rather stiff. This is in part due to the power of the Wii, as well as the budget nature of the game.

There is also not a whole lot going on in the streets, with levels mostly quiet of action until you come across a baddie. At that point, expect to be shot at, so teamwork with your AI controlled squad is important, as only a few shots will kill you.

Unfortunately, this embodies the sounds of a budget title. Voice and audio were not much to be too excited about, with many of the levels substantially quiet.

Multiplayer is also completely nonexistent, except for one admittedly weird co-op mode. In this, one player controls the marine and a reticule, and then the second player piggybacks with a second reticule. It's like player one is playing an FPS, and player two is playing an on-rails shooter. For a game that prides itself on military realism, this is a little odd. However, the option seems to be nice, and it'll be something military dads can play with their kids.

I really don't want to massively pass on Marines: Modern Urban Combat, as Destineer does have a certain pedigree when it comes to this sort of game. Without more hands-on time with the game, I cannot say if the stands up to its promise of realism. It really might reach that. I just believe that making a realistic shooter on the Wii, like Marines: Modern Urban Combat, is almost an unrealistic.

While the actual elements and AI of the game is aimed to a high order, everything else (the graphics, the audio, lack of multiplayer) just creates an environment that doesn't quite feel realistic. I hope the team can pull it together, and we'll see how this game turns out. And hell, the $29.99 budget price will appeal to someone.

So its hardly Call of Duty but it looks like it wont be as bad as Jurassic: The Hunted or Far Cry Wii. Downloading it for the sake of it, might give it a try when I have nothing else to play.

Lol, this is my 3,000th post? Really?

The main thing I'm looking at is splitscreen, since most of the great Wii shooters lack a splitscreen or local play (outside of the lame Squadmate thing in CoD). Odds are this has nothing on CoD4, but if it plays like a somewhat respectable CoD clone and has splitscreen, I'm in. Even for Destineer.

I don't ever remember seeing exploding buildings in the original and I doubt this cheap ass port would include them.

Oh yeah 2.05GB scrubbed.

That's the original game. There's another Wii boxart though, but that's probably for other regions.

This game just reminds of what a wonderful kingdom Wii is. You've got the great big, white Nintendo palace smack dab in the middle, and then all the third-party dregs hanging around just outside the palace gates begging for food of any kind.

Can't even get upset with publishers anymore when they toss something like this onto the system. They spend big bucks, they usually lose. They invest minimal effort, and they usually break even or make a moderate profit. Now, if we could just convince Valve to port Half-Life 2 over to the system with IR functionality.

Well, some efforts pay off all right. Umbrella Chronicles, Modern Warfare Reflex, Red Steel, Monster Hunter Tri, Okami, World at War, Sonic and the Secret Rings did pretty well in terms of sales, so ya get as much cash as you invest your efforts. When you make horses-barbie-imagine-related shovelware- alas, poor Yorick! This one lookes like a usual third-party cash-in Wii-make, but since the original game was all right...why not to give it a spin? As seen on CNN and stuff....

This is the thread I meant to post in!

I'm download the compressed version right now. 2.04 gigs (although that's also counting the rar compression).

I think this has splitscreen. From Nintendo.com's info on the game...

• A Compelling Real-World Campaign: This is no arcade shooter! Lead your four-man squad through the deadly streets of Beirut, using the tactics and tools of the US Marine Corps.
• Be a Leader: Both your squad and your enemies feature deadly AI unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. Step up and command your squad in the only FPS for Wii that lets you issue orders to your fellow Marines!
• Killer Gameplay: Gameplay controls have been rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of Wii’s unique motion-based control scheme. Take on your friends in an all-new split-screen multiplayer mode!

I may be obsessing about the splitscreen, but it's desperately needed. Otherwise I'll have to stick to Quantum for my local play shooting.

So, gave it a try.

Ugh. Just ugh.

Broken controls. You move overly slow and the turning is way too sensitive and way too fast. Not to mention customization is barebones so you can't fix that. Not to mention the splitscreen multiplayer they boasted is not there, as far as I can tell. Clearly just a shovelware game, poorly ported and just plain boring.

The game was not good on XBox so why should a port be better for Wii...

I think CoD:MW and Conduit are good enough muliplayer-FPS and Singleplayer is IMO a bit overrated in FPS!

Well, from what I've heard from my parents, he had a seizure last night, perhaps an epileptic episode, fucking died, had a near death experience, my dad called the paramedics, they showed up, took him to the hospital, and he woke up covered in tubes, and started complaining.
