I'm on 3.2 and don't see much reason to upgrade. My 3.2 can do everything that 4.2 can do

Except run VC/Wiiware from the SD

It is a very nifty feature.

But, you are right. If you do not want to update, you definitely do not HAVE to. That is a good thing...unlike some other consoles I know!

If you can do it safely and without harming ur WII, why not? It's easy to do, just make sure u update to 1.0.5 HBC/DVDX, then update to 4.2 with waki updater and then use the new preloader 0.29 JODI.

Then bam you're all set. I believe WII Speak is installed, as I didnt have them before the update.

For:
: Everything works, my wii is still as hacked and can do everything a 3.2 can + more.
: It's FUN for me to update and mess with my wii!
: My system cant be updated via ninty's update and cause problems.
: It's good to be running on ninty's anti-piracy version with full softmod

Against:
: You have to do something?
: If not know what your doing risk of brick? (i.e wii noob)
: erm you like to be out-of-date? win 98 anyone?

Just my reasons thats all.

Yuck! Nonononono! Don't do it the wrong way! Download the SAFE installer!

I usually use the Wani updaters, but something doesn't sit right with the 4.2 one. I keep getting ret=-1 errorz at various places, also it locks up sometimes at different spots. Ive tried with 3 different SD and SDHC cards. Also, last time I checked it still wasn't on his blog

Does the safe installer leave preloader intact? I've read varying reports of incompatibilty/problems with preloader 0.29 and 4.2x.
I would prefer to have startpatch but Im on a PAL console. Do we have any news on a Startpatch 4.2E?

This is possibly because Waninoko has made the updater too fast, although he has left the Wii Softmodding scene, he´d return and did the updater... a little more time and it would be better?

Maybe, but he did the 4.0/4.1 updaters in a short space of time and they worked flawlessly for me. If I can get confirmation on the preloader issues and hopefully get Startpatch 4.2E (fingers crossed) then I will have a stab at this Safe Updater

Is there a way to actually block updates via Preloader? I don’t want my stupid cousins updating/screwing up my Wii over the Christmas holidays.

Yes, disable/delete your online in the Wii settings. Or, beat their asses with a stick if they come within 10ft of it

I would love to beat them with a stick, but that is frowned upon by the relatives, removing my wireless connection is a good idea, but they usually like to play Mario Kart online

do what i do,
Long story short, banner brick your settings,

edit the system menu (using MyMenu for example) and find the file that has images for settings, then replace one of the images with an image too big or too small then install the file, now when you try to go into settings it will just hang at a black screen =).

i believe that updating to 4.2 even though it does absolutely nothing is a satisfaction for others just to say their wii is up to date. i on my part was also always updating until i was satisfied with the stability of my wii at system 4.1 and did not bother to update to 4.2. let's respect what others believe on what is best on their own wii...

I'm probably going to hold off for now (StartPatch 4.2 is great but it doesn't have some hacks I'd like), but if I did it, it would probably be 'because I can'.

2 Questions:

1) Are there good themes (Mario or other Nintendo-ey themes) for 4.2? I think I read 4.1 themes work on it, but I have been searching around, and cannot find a lot of them. The 3.2 Mario I am using is the main reason I never updated to 4.x cause I haven't seen a 4.x theme I liked as much and I don't know how to convert my 3.2 theme to 4.x.

2) After using the easy 4.2 updater, how do we get Preloader-Jodi working without any issues? Step-by-step would be good. I think I need an IOS 70 that has been Trucha patched, and to set Preloader to load IOS 70. Anything else?

Thanks.

1. Only thing I have seen so far is DarkWii. I'm sure more will become available as the update becomes more popular. It has only been out a very short time

2. You also need es_identify patched into IOS70. Use wwpacker setup, download IOS70 with NUSD, and drag it over the "freethebug" batch file to patch it for use with preloader. I am not very fluent with preloader, so read xzxero's stickied guide for more info on this.

1) there several themes available at wadder.net or gamingexposed website plus the info that you are asking.
2) i think if i am not mistaken there is already a thread for Preloader-Jodi...might as well read it dude.

I have the IOS70-64-v6687 [Patched][FreeTheBug] wad - so is that the culmination of those steps you just mentioned? Thanks to anyone who can verify this!

4.0, 4.1 and 4.2 themes are all the same theme if you have the .mym you can run it through mymenu with the 4.2 app and out pops a 4.2 csm/app. You just need the .mym the app and mymenu and you've got a 4.2 theme.
