Hacking Why should I switch to sysnand?

Sandisk is a very good brand, it's not like they weren't used, they lasted 3 years before RIP. If not sandisk then who do you use?

You just named off all the brands I refuse to buy lol. Although old SanDisk are reliable, I have a bunch of 2gb cards that are really old. Kingston is just trash, every flash drive and sd card I have had from them has died. I stay away from trancend because I know too many people who have had issues
Out of curiosity, what brands would you recommend

I have dealt with many systems that have died because or the nands shitting the bed(that happens when you repair and hard mod systems a lot) the brand of the system doesn't matter(I have dealt with it on all of the big 3). Also old systems seem to last a lot longer than new systems(hint the 3ds isn't an old system), they don't make them like they use to.
I have flash drives and sd cards that are older than the 3ds that have been used like crazy and still work. Flash memory is a fickle little bitch that can just die(hint nands are flash memory)

No it's not, flash memory can just die. Some brands are better than others(some brands have a high failure rate). Older flash memory seems to be way more stable than new.
Well let's not compare to nands from modern home console systems that have been purposely designed to overheat, and cause heat related damage to system components, how many hand helds?

I also read somewhere that flash memory life is applicable to a per block basis so just because you've reached the limit in one block doesn't mean the entire memory is shot. So if all you do is write to ctrnand, if it should ever die, than you should be able to continue to use your 3ds by creating an emunand.

As long as there isn't 100,000 ARM9LH forks/rev's released, we should be okay :)

I've had a number die on me. Two were Sandisk, two were Transcend, 1 was Kingston, they don't die completely when they do decide to go, they just fail to write any further data.

I have yet to have my nand go to read only.
I've had a kingston die after a matter of months but that's it.

Do you have any emunand.bin backups?

yes i do, an old one though, will that be fine?

i think it is on 10.4 or 10.5 (the backed up emuNAND, and i also have sysNAND backed up long ago, the sysNAND i have is 9.0)
so am i good? those can still be used yeah?

cause my current setup is a9lh/sysNAND 10.7 with aurei.cfw

So other than not being one of the 1337 and shaving a nano-second off boot times, there's no reason to switch to using sysnand after installing a9lh then? :D

-less space taken up on SD card
-longer life for your SD card (reads and writes to NAND are done on the actual 3DS NAND chip not on your SD card. SD cards are only good for a certain number of reads/writes so extends life)
-only install DSi/GBA once
-closer to a truly hacked system ... feels like you've really beaten your console
The second point is a downside in this case. The 3DS' NAND chip does not have unlimited life either, it uses the same type of memory that is in SD cards. You would rather your SD card get worn out and stop working than your 3DS NAND. However, in either case the flash memory should still outlive your console. There is not a lot of writing being done, mostly reading, and reads don't wear out flash memory (unlike HDDs, where high amounts of disk I/O, either read or write, will wear out the mechanical parts of the drive over time, though it doesn't have a finite amount of reads/writes like flash memory so it can vary a lot how long the drive lasts)

I just guess, I'm still using emunand :( I'm just thinking if you create an emunand with that emunand.bin, and export and inject agbsave + twln + twlp blah blah to your updated sysnand, then it might works.

I don't have A9LH yet, BUT with a fast enough SD card (you should really invest at least $20 on a decent speed to size ratio) I'd still recommend emuNAND even with the restore capabilities of A9LH. The space savings is very minimal of changing to sysNAND, and if you are doing A9LH you're likely looking to install CIA's, which back to my first point - invest in a good SD card.

emuNAND will always be that extra layer of protection for your system. Just because it's protection is less valuable now with A9LH doesn't mean it should be underestimated. I don't need a contraceptive to have sex, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't use one.

I like gskill, they are cheap and work well. Out of the 20 or so cards I have/had of theirs only had 2 die. One I killed and the other the wifes phone just started hating. It still worked but only in my pc so I replaced it. Samsung also seems to be good, just a bit more expensive.

I have some older 2gb sandisk that's still going strong after forever and a day. Same with a 1gb flash drive I have of theirs. I've had 8gb, 16gb flash drives and sd cards from them that didn't make the year mark. Same with a 32gb sd card(it was the final straw, lasted maybe 3 months and took some very important pictures with it)

As for your handheld question, 0 because no one really gives a shit about handhelds(lets face it lol) but flash mem can just go even before its read/write cycle. So while the chance of the system dying from the nand shitting the bed is fairly low the risk is still there.

I can attest to the reliability of Samsung EVO SD cards. The Evo+ is also good if you're willing to pay a bit more (faster max read/write periods).
Yeah, I regret not going for the EVO+, but I didn't know they were I thing until after I purchased my EVO.

well luckily i do have emuNAND backup, just in case.
but since i wanted a fresher cleaner mSD i went on ahead and swapped nands then wiped my GW emuNAND partition. ( i have had used my GW card very rarely since i only play .cia)

yeah, but i guess i will leave that be for now, as everything is working perfectly for me :)
