Why is there a "Check for new posts" button

There will never be new posts on such threads.
It's not really an issue but it's weird to see it also displayed on locked threads.

Staff (and others in very specific situations, I believe, given certain thread access permissions) can directly comment in locked threads without the thread getting unlocked

It's uncommon for sure, but it is an edge-case that does exist.

Is that edge-case why the "check for new posts" button exists on locked thread still? Probably not, it's more likely it's just more hassle than it's worth to modify the site/forum software to have it not show it on locked threads
