I heard you can format an SD Card to the WBFS to play games, but I'm planning on using an external HD since it only plays Wii games anyways. Do I still need the SD Card for any reason at all?

To install a USB loader channel onto your wii...

Or to run a USB loader .dol from the homebrew channel...

Or to use ocarina with the various USB loaders that support it.

The newest loader has the WBFS support for large SDHC cards. To actually use the homebrew channel and the usb loader they have to be an SD card. There is no way currently to inject them into the Wii's permanent memory cache (nor do I believe there is any reason to do so).

So a quick easy sum up is: the SD card stores your hacking apps.
