Because they are dealing with the Chinese market that will use their projects with credit or following any license on the project. Wood R4 used to be open source until cheap clones started using it.
Personally though, I think it’s pride and money. If you are getting money from these people to keep your project closed off, then you are likely to continue doing so.

Pretty much what Xdq said

Literally so you cant just lift their code and make a clone that you sell for your own money, They control the code they control the product

Flashcart producers are not in it for the good of the community, They are there to make money
Well it would be nice if everything was made for free. If I'm making something, I would both sell it and make it open-source unless it took loads of time.

I honestly think the biggest failure of open source projects in the past was attempting to both be open source with a closed environment. I honesty feel like they should have down what happened with Twi and just leaned in on knowing it will and should be used on everything.

Sure, but some people want to earn money and keep developing new tools.
By selling an amazing new product that is revolutionary, it just gives the copycats a easy "download and produce". Look at Picofly once it was out. The original HWFly disappeared and RP2040 HWFly popped up.
