I don't know what it is or what it does so can anyone fill me in on that?
Am I suppose to regularly backup my NAND every few times I install something (whether it is a .wad, cios, etc.)?

People backup their NAND, because it is for Brick Protection.

Just in case you've installed something incorrectly, you can use your NAND Backup, to revert back to when you backed up your NAND. Think of it as a "System Restore".

If you are using BootMii on boot2, you'll have best brick protection there is, at the moment.
